One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

Anneke Schwob's "The Professor of Desire Presents" is one of my favourite stories of the year so far. Fuck. ergot.'s strike rate of putting out short fiction that make me feel absolutely wretched (complimentary) continues to skyrocket.

We are asking the WSFS business meeting to extend this story’s eligibility until 2026, because it received extremely limited distribution in 2025. Only 5,000 copies of the print edition were distributed in late 2025, to a primarily non-SFF audience. It became available online on July 9, 2026. 1/2

WHAT HAPPENED WAS SO VAST AND

TERRIBLE, "absolute in its terribleness,"[3]
and its cause so obscure that it became, in
Marguiles's sardonic formulation, "a perfect
culture for growing theory."[4] The number
of "explanations" offered in the first month
alone, by experts and amateurs, was
bevond count,'5] many of them untestable,
absurd or meaningless ("a local suspension
of the laws of physics"; "invasion by an
alien species"; something called

"renumerology").[6]
