Happy PFD day

A federal appeals court denied a conservation group’s request to stop the state from building a nearly 3-mile segment of road in the remote Izembek National Wildlife Refuge on the Alaska Peninsula.

Federal appeals court allows construction of road segment in Izembek refuge, which could be part of larger $66M road
Conservation groups fear the 3-mile segment will be the first step in the controversial, full 19-mile road connecting King Cove and Cold Bay.

Successful first splitboard trip
Looking uphill from the skin tracks at Manitoba peak, three skiers up a ways ahead of me. Ski tracks winding down on the right side. Clear blue sky aboveLooking southeast from the top of Manitoba mountain, the sun on the facing slope and surrounding shadows looks like a silhouette of a bird taking off in flight. Hazy white clouds starting to blow in from the same directionLooking across the highway towards Fresno, skin tracks disappearing down the slope in the foreground. A hazy white carpet of clouds seems to be surrounding from all directions Looking southwest down the highway at summit lake, the sun still shining, but clouds starting to condense in the lower atmosphere just above the mountains. Untouched snow in the foreground before it drops off

one of those things you'd think would be a known fact by now, but it's not: the shape of the Milky Way Galaxy. it's now thought to be a barred spiral rather than a spiral, and the exact shape is still not known for certain.

Hän Gwich’in musher Jody Potts-Joseph has outfitted all 16 of her Iditarod dogs with handmade beaded blankets made by Alaska or Canadian First Nations artists! The time and love that went into these, wow... 📸: www.vogue.com/article/idit... #Iditarod54
Four dogs, closeup on the front two, waiting to run the Iditarod. They're standing on snow as light snow falls, and they're wearing small blankets on their backs. Description from Vogue's website: "Natrah and Coki prepare to lead the team on the 11-mile kickoff course, wearing blankets made by Denise Newman and April Monroe. Photo: Emily Sullivan"Two women sit on a leather couch making the blankets for the dogs. Above them are two photos of an Alaskan view and Iditarod dogs. Description from Vogue website: "Kate Chavez, one of the beadwork artists, working with her sister Brittany to make last-minute adjustments to the blankets before the Iditarod starts. Description from Vogue website: "A detail shot of a beaded blanket by Erika Scheffen and Keisha Green from Dawson City, Yukon. “There is so much meaning, from the northern lights to the stars. I put in the Big Dipper and Little Dipper, which Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and many other [nations] have traditional stories about that have been passed down through generations orally,” says Scheffen. “I also added forget-me-nots to represent the Alaska state flower.” Photo: Emily Sullivan"Closeup of another blanket, featuring a beaded dogs face surrounded by a circle and snowflakes. Description from Vogue's website: "A detail shot of a beaded blanket by April Monroe of Fairbanks, Alaska. “On this blanket is Jody’s sled dog Flash,” says Monroe. “He was a foundation dog for her team, and many of the dogs running the race with her today are his children and grandchildren.” Photo: Emily Sullivan"

Went to the beach today
Some shear rocks jutting up from the beach into mossy cliffs with Sitka spruce perched on top, decorated with usnea. The beach rocks dusted with crusty snow, and the small reflective frozen channel surrounding the cliff bottoms with ice rings. The snow covered mountains of Kenai Fjords National Park in the distance looming over Resurrection Bay. Blue skies with low wispy clouds leading out to the Gulf of Alaska

Baby’s first gauge swatch! As soon as it dries I’m frogging and starting my first sweater (it’s still attached to the skein)
A knitting swatch of a light grayish blue alpaca & wool blend yarn still hanging from the circular needles with a wooden gauge ruler lying across the top. It matches the gauge for the pattern, so I am very excited to start!

Today I walked 5 miles on a frozen lake to see a glacier
Looking down at my feet (with my Steiger mukluks) at an open section of ice, the cracks going at least 1’ deep, and the water a rich deep green blue belowAn early picture looking down lake towards portage glacier, some sparse pink clouds dotting the sky, all the peaks and snow still in shadows as the sun is just barely starting to rise somewhere behind the mountainsA bit further down the lake, on the east side on a wide open patch of ice, the sun still below the mountains, my dog wearing her mushing booties investigating some cracksPortage glacier from about a half mile away from where I’m standing in the middle of the far end of the lake. Dry snow covers the ice and makes snowdrifts everywhere. Sun still hasn’t risen yet, everything is early blue hour

Some of the most intense and vivid light pillars I've seen on the south side of Fairbanks tonight! I took a few more photos: photos.lwpetersen.com/Recent-Photos #alaska #lightpillar #atmosphericoptics #fairbanks #nightsky
Nighttime winter scene in Fairbanks, Alaska. A snow-covered road with deep tire tracks runs straight into the distance. Beyond the road, bright city lights create numerous tall, vertical light pillars rising into the dark sky. The pillars vary in brightness and height, forming pale white and bluish columns above the horizon beneath a low cloud layer.Vertical light pillars above a snowy landscape in Fairbanks, Alaska at night. A bright orange light source near the ground produces a vivid orange pillar extending upward, surrounded by multiple white and bluish pillars from nearby lights. Leafless shrubs and small trees appear in silhouette in the foreground, with snowbanks and a low ridge separating the viewer from the lights.A winter night scene showing tall, narrow light pillars rising above a dark treeline in Fairbanks, Alaska. The pillars are evenly spaced and pale white, stretching upward into a cloudy sky. I just finished knitting this hat I started ~20 years ago, decreased until I couldn’t anymore and panicked a little, then just started binding off the last few stitches 😅
My dog wearing my finally completed masterpiece, a gray knit hat using… I don’t even remember what kind of yarn. Probably a blend of natural and synthetic fibers. Knit in a round until I had to switch to double pointed needles. The bottom edge is rolled up since it’s a stockinette stitch, and the top comes to a point with one yarn dangling down the side like and old timey sleeping cap.

The Aurora out tonight - bright green ribbons and sprays with some sparse pink; Resurrection peaks and tree silhouettes in the foreground. No clouds. At all. I’m flabbergasted.
