I have often said people are essentially arguing that engineering is impossible when they say there’s no way to build a reliable system out of unreliable parts. it‘s the most ordinary thing in the world

Ursula von der Leyen and Mark Carney, reimagined in the roles of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

The image references the famous photograph of Reagan and Thatcher walking together at Camp David, with von der Leyen taking Reagan’s place and Carney accompanying her in Thatcher’s. A familiar image of the transatlantic relationship, recast for a different era.

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

If the finding is that AI is bad or biased at something, you need to be much more careful. You cannot claim that because GPT-4 fails at something, that AI is bad at that task, because current or future models may do it. So what can you claim? These are just some examples: 3/

Walter White, bald with a reddish goatee and glasses, sits shaken in a Denny's booth wearing a brown Kenny Rogers t-shirt, staring down. Across the table, seen from behind, Jesse Pinkman reaches for a glass of syrup beside a plate of pancakes. Backlit diner windows behind them. From Breaking Bad, season 4 episode 1 ("Box Cutter"), the diner scene after Victor's murder, radiating Walt's stunned "Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about?" energy.

This is the French nuclear deterrence doctrine
Film still from Dune: Part Two (2024). Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalet, stands bruised and dust-covered in layered desert robes inside a dim, amber-lit room on Arrakis. He addresses an out-of-focus figure, Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, as a large crowd of pale-robed Fremen watches behind him. The subtitle reads: “If the Great Houses attack, our atomics will obliterate all spice fields.” The scene shows his threat to destroy Arrakis’s spice production if the Great Houses invade.

Still from the 1984 Computer Chronicles episode “Artificial Intelligence.” John McCarthy, identified by the on-screen caption as a professor of computer science at Stanford University, sits in a television studio wearing dark-framed glasses, a beige suit, white shirt, and dark tie. He has thick white hair and a long pointed white beard. Yellow-green text across the lower half reads: “JOHN McCARTHY, Prof. of Computer Science, Stanford University.”
