my latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

A poster on 8.5 x 11 inch paper saga Fishtown fish facts: red lipped catfish or of ocephalus Darwini. Then a pic of that freaky fish with 4 limbs it rests on the ground and then the words “stg this fish real red-lipped batfish walk ocean floor with they flippers RLBF have RBF, not they fault

This reminds me of Cardinal John Henry Newman's book Definition of a Gentleman. I often cite Newman's book because it's so instructive. The term gentleman is so overwrought and frequently abused, but to the degree it means anything at all, I think Newman captures it here:
He has his eyes on all his company; he is tender towards the bashful, gentle towards the distant, and merciful towards the absurd; he can recollect to whom he is speaking; he guards against unseasonable allusions, or topics which may irritate; he is seldom prominent in conversation, and never wearisome.

He makes light of favours while he does them, and seems to be receiving when he is conferring. He never speaks of himself except when compelled, never defends himself by a mere retort, he has no ears for slander or gossip, is scrupulous in imputing motives to those who interfere with him, and interprets everything for the best.

He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp sayings for arguments, or insinuates evil which he dare not say out. From a long-sighted prudence, he observes the maxim of the ancient sage, that we should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend.

Loving the work of this artist in Padova: a chap, his girlfriend, his cat and his hat #StreetArt
A stencilled black painting on a wall, next to a cafe window. A silhouette couple kiss: a man in a top hat and a woman whose hat is blowing away. Red rose petals billow out of their embrace. They are watched by a black and white cat. The same couple sit on top of an electric junction box, facing in opposite directions. The man now has a feather in his hat. Their cat sits on another box, still gazing at them The same couple kiss again: the woman is pushing the man - still in his hat- up against a wall/ downpipe; the cat perches on a door frameThe man is now alone, his hat now without a feather, his coat swings out behind him. He has spray-painted a wobbly line on the wall, his cat walks along it.

Masking discourse is on again and I’ll just say if you see people masking when few others are it’s likely because they’ve determined that for them, in that setting, the benefit of not catching (or spreading) whatever’s going around is worth the cost of masking. It’s rarely more complicated than that

I've been screaming it for years: the right in Canada is headed down an American-style path on almost every issue because the right-wing media plays that tune, and the right-wing pretend media plays that tune. It's headed in one direction, and we have never had a clearer view of where that leads.

The second, Buttercup, a mainly black with white calico, is sitting beside on the TBR pile of books on the wooden side table. The third, Honey, is all white and a bit of a chonk, is below sitting on the carpet. We miss Honey and Bailey very much.
