Today in public library service desk work: one angry caregiver whose teen skipped school and came to the library, one patron delighted by our mobile print option, and one in-depth reference question about a possible escaped enslaved person.

reasons I despise banned books week
BBW is already widely used internet lingo, and it ain’t about books. Why are we promoting something we’re against (banning books) instead of promoting something we are FOR (the freedom …

I am shocked, shocked I say, that neither copy of The Plays of Euripides in English (copyright 1910) have ever circulated at this small public library.

Getting lots of “kids these days are the worst” vibes from a lot of adults tasked with providing resources for all ages in public libraries lately and nope. Kids are full people right now. Do better.

My Rage Against the Machine/Les Mis mashup is complete. This is my interpretation of the quilt guild’s summer challenge “quilt with your interpretation and/or feelings towards our current ‘democracy’” all hand stitched.
Quilt hanging on a card catalog. Neutral background with navy cursive appliqué “Do you hear thr people sing?” The background is embroidered in red starting light and getting bolder the lyrics to “killing in the name” the quilting effect is a focused sunburst from the center.

Abdul El-Sayed gave Democrats the template for dodging bad faith questions about sports. Call them unserious. Refocus the conversation on things people are actually struggling to survive right now. There is an energy crisis unfolding, this should not be hard.

Great system, no notes www.propublica.org/article/scho...
Voucher programs and the private schools they increasingly fund have proliferated across the country. Yet those schools often reject children with disabilities — the very kids who were used to help sell early voucher programs to lawmakers and the public - for having needs that are too costly, complex or disruptive. That leaves those children with few options beyond the public schools. And as public schools lose enrollment as a result of more and more
voucher use, they lose resources that would benefit children who remain, including those with disabilities.

Reading Prairie Fires, the Laura Ingalls Wilder biography, and there's this point where some nerd in the agriculture department is like, look, it's too arid west of this one longitude, it's impossible to farm there unless you set up irrigation collectives, government policy should encourage that

It seems notable to me that all the claims and suggestions for "future proofing" the library revolve around capitulating to the whims and desires of CEOs or institutional Presidents rather than the one thing that can actually protect the library: securing stable, permanent funding.

Meanwhile, on Vermont side of border the state is shutting down a successful program of motel vouchers. “Homelessness in Vermont?” Yes, 2nd or 3rd highest rate per capita. Not despite being a tourist destination but in part because; 2nd homes are a plague that drive full-timers here into the cold.

the thing is, MAHA is like. one end of the spectrum. the other end of the spectrum is NOT, however, the current medical system. that's the middle of that bell curve, that. the actual other end of the spectrum is 'the medical system without medical misogyny and racism' and it currently doesn't exist.

I know this is a common belief, but it’s not true. If people went anti-vaxx/MAHA because they were excluded from the medical establishment, we would see sky-high rates among poor people, minorities and the uninsured. We don’t.
