Good news: politicians on both sides stay broadly positive about democracy overall. But the fact that these attitudes shift so systematically with electoral fortune — even among political elites — raises real questions about when that malleability could translate into anti-democratic behavior.

Is this just self-selection? We also exploit close races in Iceland with a regression discontinuity design — comparing the last elected candidates to the next non-elected ones on the same list. Results point in the same direction, suggesting a real causal effect.

Key insight: the individual-level gap depends on the party-level outcome. Losing your seat matters a lot if your party is in government — but if your party is in opposition too, the individual gap basically disappears. Collective outcomes dominate.

Politicians face TWO levels of "winning": personally getting a seat, and their party entering government. We find losers at both levels report lower satisfaction with democracy, less trust that citizens still believe in the system, and weaker support for representative institutions.

Does losing an election affect politicians' democratic attitudes? A large literature documents a winner–loser gap among voters, but evidence on political elites was long scarce. A series of recent studies has narrowed this gap. A thread on the state of the evidence. 🧵
