Together with Mathieu Hanemian, we're searching for an undergrand student (Master or Erasmus internship, final-year engineering student) to explore the effect of intercropping on the soil microbiota. If this sounds interesting to you, please reach our with your CV and a motivation letter!
Internship objectives
The main objective of the internship will be to determine how intercropping modifies the composition and
functions of the rhizosphere microbiome associated with each cultivated species, in comparison with sole
crops. The intern will also seek to identify common microbial signatures across different intercropping
systems in order to highlight potential general mechanisms associated with plant diversification. Particular
attention will be paid to the functions potentially associated with the observed changes, based on the
identification of microbial taxa and targeted qPCR analyses.
The intern will participate in the entire analytical workflow, from molecular biology procedures (DNA
extraction, PCR, preparation of sequencing libraries) to bioinformatic data processing, statistical analyses
using R, and biological interpretation of the results. The results will contribute to identifying the microbial
mechanisms that may explain the agronomic benefits of intercropping and may help guide the development
of new agroecological practices.

With the escalating impacts of climate change, drought stress (DS) is significantly decreasing water accessibility and availability, causing substantial direct and indirect economic repercussions within agricultural systems. Addressing the needs of a growing global population necessitates urgent advancements in breeding DS-tolerant crops while maintaining high yields. This urgency demands a fast and adaptable defensive strategy to mitigate the adverse effects of DS on crop productivity. Accelerating such developments requires leveraging advanced omics-assisted breeding (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics), genetic engineering (e.g., transgenic technology, and genome editing), machine learning, precise phenotyping, crop wild relatives, and speed breeding. These fast-forward methods present highly promising avenues for the design of future crops that can withstand DS pressures. In summary, we propose an innovative approach termed the “OGS trio,” which encompasses omics integration, genetic engineering, and speed breeding. This trio stands composed to transform efforts against DS, offering significant potential for developing drought-tolerant crops to achieve and food security amidst climate change.

🌍 SPECIAL ISSUE EDITORIAL 🌍 "Climate change is no longer a distant projection but an ongoing process redefining the boundaries of plant survival." Balsera, Pérez-Ruiz & Serrato introduce a Special Issue on multiscale strategies to enhance plant resilience under climate change. #PlantScience 🧪
Fig. 1.Multiscale integration of plant responses to dynamic environmental conditions. Plants experience fluctuating environmental conditions, including heat, drought, salinity, and biotic pressures, among others. Within this context, plant responses emerge from the coordinated interaction of multiple regulatory layers, such as calcium signalling, hormonal pathways, redox processes, transcriptional and epigenetic regulation, and plant–microbe interactions. These interconnected systems operate within metabolic and cellular constraints and define a dynamic regulatory space that continuously adjusts through time-dependent state transitions. The integration of these processes underlies key emergent properties of plant behaviour, including stability (homeostasis), flexibility (developmental plasticity), and memory (stress priming), which together determine plant performance and ecosystem-level outcomes.
