The available evidence around the death of an anti-plague laboratory worker in Siberia “does not point to a global plague emergency,” Gigi Kwik Gronvall writes. “But this tragic death should prompt Americans to question whether we have the capacity to recognize and contain the next disease threat.”

As the Ebola outbreak unfolds in the DRC, we explored different control scenarios: Improved case detection has the largest impact, but even a moderately effective vaccine could markedly reduce mortality, either through ring or community vaccination. 👉https://tinyurl.com/37ssjdvm

1/2 Ebola has reached a 7th province in Congo. A 23-year-old man traveled more than 2,000 km over about 3 weeks, passing through Rwanda and Uganda and then across Congo before dying in Sud-Ubangi. His journey shows the challenge of containing the virus as it moves along busy transport corridors.

I am saddened but not really surprised. The situation in the ground remains incredibly complex. This outbreak has the potential to reach or even surpass the scale of the West African Ebola outbreak.

The recorded death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is about to cross 1,000 cases. In reality there have likely been a lot more deaths already. Many new cases appear to have no link to known cases, suggesting much of the spread is still happening in the dark.

#Ebola: DRC is trailing in posting new numbers. They had been posting on a one-day delay, but there have been some gaps of late. The numbers as of 6/29: 1,333 confirmed cases, 399 of which were fatal. An increase of 26 new cases from the previous day. A hike in contacts identified, which is good.

Both Ebola and hantavirus are zoonotic. These outbreaks are not random. They are linked to combinations of ecological disruption, changing human–animal contact, insecurity, and environmental change. Preparedness and prevention have to be prioritised where risk is highest.
010
Dr Charlotte Hammer @epihammer.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The concern here is not a global Ebola pandemic. It is the severe, localised impact on already fragile systems, and what it tells us about how risk is changing. The challenge is less about single outbreaks, and more about whether preparedness is keeping up with that shift.
100
Dr Charlotte Hammer @epihammer.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
At the same time, preparedness and surveillance are still often organised around individual pathogens (although change in that domain is underway). But real-world crises do not arrive one by one. They overlap, interact, and place simultaneous strain on health systems and governance.

Dr Charlotte Hammer @epihammer.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
In eastern DRC, the Ebola outbreak is unfolding in a context of insecurity, cross‑border movement, and constrained response capacity. Different strain, no approved vaccine, aid cuts, limited trust, high mobility. These are not side issues. They shape what response is possible.
100
Dr Charlotte Hammer @epihammer.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
These are not isolated events. They sit within a wider landscape of growing socio‑ecological complexity, fragility, and interdependence. Risk is not contained within single diseases or places. It is distributed across systems, environments, and contexts.

Dr Charlotte Hammer @epihammer.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The current Ebola outbreak, alongside a recent hantavirus incident in a very different setting, is a reminder of how outbreak risk is actually unfolding today. As both a researcher in this space and someone who has worked in outbreak response, this pattern is becoming increasingly familiar.
