Tel-Aviv, calling for an agreement to end the war, return the hostages back alive, and stop the killing of innocents in Gaza. What will bring safety & security to ourselves, our families, our two peoples? Not siege and occupation. Only Israeli-Palestinian peace.

In its second reversal today, UT Austin now says students arrested in protests will be allowed back on campus *for any purpose*—two hours after saying they would only be allowed back for "academic reasons" and the same day it distributed flyers saying those arrested were fully banned!

UT Austin changes message again, says arrested students will be allowed on campus for any reason
A university spokesperson originally said students would be banned even though charges against them had been dismissed.

I assumed an intention to your question that is not actually stated because of the tense nature of this issue and really do apologize for doing so.

Genuinely not the intention as someone who appreciates your perspective. Obviously I can’t answer for OP’s but if I had posted this story and received the same question I’d say “No, clearly this is an abuse of power and me being disturbed as a Jew does not mean I’m manufacturing consent for it”

It seems pretty clear that treating the real concerns of student protests seriously also requires treating what the people who publicly represent them say as important and we all have to not play games and argue it’s *the only thing* that matters or conversely that it’s just a bad faith distraction

My Dad is a Nikki Haley conservative but he basically becomes a fan of any person who goes on Howard (loves Lady Gaga because she “came off well” on Stern) so I think this is honestly going to be a pretty interesting social experiment for thousands of middle aged men in that demographic

even if we avoid the worst consequences of this decision — which, as rick says, involve trump getting elected and then pardoning himself for his attempted coup (and likely trying again) — the court's actions should be seen as grounds for dramatic action to curb its power

The only thing that’s been made clear for me since 10/7 is that for a lot of non-Jews we are only useful or worth defending so long we confirm their existing biases on what a Jew should be. It is blatantly applied to Palestinian voices as well and makes clear that allyship is conditional.

Something tells me neither Cotton nor his buddy Hawley would have supported deploying the National Guard to Little Rock in 1957, which says a lot about their eagerness to deploy it to college campuses today.
Josh Hawley tweet:

Eisenhower sent the 101st to Little Rock.
It's time for Biden to call out the National Guard at our universities to protect Jewish

New North Carolina poll from Meredith College: Josh Stein (D) leads Mark Robinson (R) 45% to 36%. (That's much better than his 39/35 lead in January, and his 38/36 lead in November. It's just one poll, but lots of attention to Robinson's comments since then.)

The Mothering of the Exodus

The midwives sneered and moaned about the Israelite women's laboring, they are cattle, they said, they drop children like sows in the field, nothing to be done.

Their eyes flashing behind kohl, Breath bottled in their dry throats as Pharaoh nodded, A gullible man bedecked in amethyst and self-import.

a lie, a lie, a lie, The midwives went on rolling gauze and mashing poultice for pain and feverWhile Jochabed wrapped her baby's swaddle tighter than she had been taught, no colic, a miracle, her neighbors made a cacophony when he cried for his supper, No babies here! Just a stubborn mule who brays like a newborn! A broken bowl! A domestic squabble! Leave us to our troubles! Jochabed passed every pinch of extra flour to her neighbors, Grateful tears seasoning every loafThe basket was rough-hewn and tarred to repel the festering Nile Jochabed wept as the current swept it from her hands, biting her lip til she swallowed blood. No one must see her weeping.

"May the reeds carry you to Zion." But heaven's roads never did lie straight.

The Promised Land was Bithiah's hands whose delight at his rosy cheeks could not have surpassed God's own "Surely this is an Israelite child, who is

commanded to die in the river's maw" she said, clutching the wet babe against her finery. Her attendants stood mute, lips pursed, their Israelite palms cold.

She smiled the smile of a confederate, "Come. Let us announce him to Pharaoh. Let us call him Moses for the reeds that brought him here. Burn the basket."

It is not the responsibility of every Jew at Columbia to absorb hostility against them as a function of a political movement and the school should have protected them without trampling on the rights of students to protest as they did. One is not a function of the other and that goes both ways.

Ephy Gee @ephygee.bsky.social · 22/04/2024
The article makes it clear that the majority of the hostility against Jewish students is coming from outside of campus and that campus protesters have spoken out against it. It is disingenuous to paint any Jew who is concerned as a) a pro Israel protester and b) critical of all anti-Israel protest

Ephy Gee @ephygee.bsky.social · 22/04/2024
So either you also didn’t read the article or are missing the point. The people quoted in this story being harassed and attacked were not counter protesting, and neither the article nor the people reposting it are advocating/nor support any suppression of free speech from the protesters.

Ephy Gee @ephygee.bsky.social · 22/04/2024
I’m struck that this excellent article takes great pains to differentiate what is happening outside campus and highlights student protesters who have called this out, and it still will be dismissed by the same people lauding the courage of these same student journalists when it fit their narrative

It is possible to (1) deplore how Columbia University's administration is reacting to the on-campus protests and (2) also think it is very bad that a bunch of ghoulish, antisemitic opportunists have taken it upon themselves to hang out just off-campus, harassing Jewish students and celebrating 10/7.

Logic(*) seems to be that by funding/assisting defense from missile attacks he is tacitly(or openly) supporting further Israeli aggression and instead he should let Iran bomb Tel Aviv without US support which would somehow deter further escalation?
