During the dry periods, these shallow depressions dry out, allowing terrestrial grasses and sedges to grow across the pond beds. When rains flood the basin, these grasses end up completely submerged under water. As the water level stabilizes, highly specialized aquatic flora quickly takes over.

Cyanoaction launches a Pan-European Stakeholder Survey on Harmful #Cyanobacteria Blooms. It is intended for water managers, researchers, authorities, organisations and all stakeholders: t1p.de/8eucc @cyanoaction.bsky.social @dgl-ev.bsky.social @freshwaterbio.bsky.social @epcn.bsky.social
Promotional infographic for the "CyanoAction CA23160 Pan-European Survey on Cyanobacterial Blooms and Mitigation Measures."

Set against a background photo of a green, algae-blooming lake surrounded by trees, the text invites users to "Help us build the first Europe-wide overview of cyanobacterial bloom management!"

A circular badge highlights that the survey is "Available in 20 languages," illustrated with a grid of 20 European national flags.

A "Why Participate?" section lists four benefits with icons:

- Provide valuable information from your country
- Contribute to better management of freshwater ecosystems
- Help identify challenges and best practices across Europe and
- Support research, policy and decision-making.

A green and blue "Take the survey!" box notes it takes 10–15 minutes and includes a button to "Click the link and share your experience!" https://cyanoaction.eu/cyanoaction-launches-a-pan-european-stakeholder-survey-on-harmful-cyanobacterial-blooms/

The bottom section features three icons with text stating the initiative is "Together for healthier lakes and reservoirs across Europe!", is intended "For water managers, researchers, authorities, organisations and all stakeholders," and that "The survey is open now!"

The footer contains the EU flag with the "COST European Cooperation in Science & Technology" logo, the project's full title "Effective Lake Management: Reducing Cyanobacterial Blooms by Actions in the Catchment" and the website https://www.cyanoaction.eu

The hidden drivers of cyanobacterial blooms
Toxic blue-green algae blooms are a threat to lake ecosystems and can be toxic for humans and animals. At present, it is only possible to predict roughly when and where such blooms will form – based on water temperature and nutrient levels. Now, a long-term study by Eawag researchers shows that the accumulation of blue-green algae in a lake depends crucially on other plankton species: some organisms promote blue-green algae blooms, whilst others can prevent them even under favourable environmental conditions.
