Our sampling campaign tracking the activity of #mammals and bats using #garden #ponds is nearly at an end! In this project, we set up an #emergence trap, a #camera trap, and a #bat detector at 80 garden ponds in #Budapest and surrounding areas. Details can be found in the photos and comments.

Garden ponds are easy to dismiss as too small to matter, but they contribute meaningfully to #urbanbiodiversity. Our new paper looks at what zooplankton live in garden vs urban ponds, and how fish and urban cover shape those communities. Check it out: doi.org/10.1002/lno....

Zooplankton communities and their responses to fish presence and urban cover across garden and other urban ponds
As cities expand globally, the ratio of artificial to natural freshwater habitats is increasing. While public urban ponds have been the subject of an increasing number of biodiversity studies, the bi...

🌊 Our new paper is out now! What happens when an invasive omnivore gets warmer? We found that the mysid Limnomysis benedeni shifts toward a more ‘herbivorous’ diet. 🦐🌡️ More here: aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... @csabavad.bsky.social @zsofiahorvath.bsky.social @kratina.bsky.social

Temperature‐driven diet shift in an invasive omnivorous crustacean feeding on plankton
Global warming alters the physiology of ectotherm consumers, potentially making their diets more herbivorous. However, the relevance and generality of these changes remain poorly understood in a mult...

Just a week of footage, but we captured so many animals visiting and using the garden ponds! Can’t wait for the next 3 weeks, plus another set of 40 garden ponds in August!

Together with @bartabarbara.bsky.social and @uhrinmarton.bsky.social, we had a great session yesterday to talk about ‘urban waters under pressure’. Thank you to all the attendees, and a special thank to the session chairs @majailiczg.bsky.social, @branslab.bsky.social, @zsofiahorvath.bsky.social.
Barbi talked about citizen science in garden ponds. Marci showed the results on amphibian communities in garden and urban ponds.I talked about zooplankton communities. Some of the speakers. All the talks were amazing! Thank you for sharing the great topics!

Often overlooked, small water bodies - streams, damp ditches, small bogs, ponds - support more rare species compared with larger habitats while high-quality ponds support about 2/3 of all freshwater plant + animal species in a landscape. 🧵 1/4 freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/news/start-w...

Heartbreaking truth: At just 1.5°C of #warming (where we already are), 70–90% of #CoralReefs could vanish. At 2.0°C, almost all (>99%) are gone. We’re watching a living wonder cross a #TippingPoint. #MarineEcology 🧪🌍🌐🌊🔥

Bad news for climate just announced! In 2024, Earth's average temperature temporarily exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time. This breach highlights accelerating climate risks - toward the end of the "safe zone" defined by the Paris Agreement.🧪🌐🌍 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Earth breaches 1.5 °C climate limit for the first time: what does it mean?
The threshold has been exceeded for only one year so far, but humanity is nearing the end of what many thought was a ‘safe zone’ as climate change worsens.
