Just saw an excellent show with the Violent Femmes and the Tallahassee Orchestra at the Word of South Festival. I have to say, though, some of Gen X men suck at concerts. Just talk, talk, talk. Shut up already.

if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.

Some in Florida are floating the idea of getting rid of property taxes, the main source of revenue for localities. I’m no fan of high taxes, but I think we need some slogans explaining why these are needed. I’ll start. Property Taxes: Because garden hoses aren’t good for fighting fires.

Since the president has signed an EO making English the official language of the United States, here is the first non-English copy of the Declaration of Independence, printed in German just days after July 4, 1776. We have always been multilingual. cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/coll...

This is happening, right now. The great "arribada" (arrival) of mother Olive Ridley sea turtles on the Odisha coast, where they dig sand-nests & lay their eggs, driven by ancient instinct. Heart-lifting, magnificent, moving: part of a geography of hope. 🎞️ by Bivash Pandav via my friend Yuvan Aves.

There are nearly 3 million immigrants in the construction industry, and they deserve the same rights as all other workers. Our union stands with our immigrant members and all working people in this country — an injury to one is an injury to all.

Of course, the talk will include this great Ralph Ellison quote @drderrickewhite.bsky.social pointed me to:
Quote from Ralph Ellison: “But can a people (its faith in an idealized American Creed not-withstanding) live and develop for over three hundred years simply by reacting? Are American Negroes simply the creation of white men, or have they at least helped to create themselves out of what they found around them? Men have made a way of life in caves and upon cliffs; why cannot Negroes have made a life upon the horns of the white man’s dilemma?” (1944)

PowerPoint slide that says “Why Study the History of Black People in Florida?” Answer: I wanted to.

Two weeks ago Chris Rufo responded to a tweet by Will Stancil confirming that, indeed, his anti-DEI work is not about corporate DEI trainings, but about undoing the Civil Rights movement. Just putting this here for the record in case there's any doubt about that.

Guys when Chris Rufo and Trump say "We're destroying DEl, we're salting the earth underneath it" and they're repealing regulations that reach back to 1965, they're not talking about corporate diversity trainings.

They are talking about civil rights
