Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 28/11/2025Came home from my Thanksgiving trip to find this in the mail. Thanks to the North Carolina Historical Review for publishing my work! 030
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 01/05/2025This is haunting me a bit because it could have been stopped if those Tampa juries had listened to those girls. 010
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 01/05/2025Turned out that he was convicted in Alabama several years later for SA on a number of women. One story said he had been linked to numerous cases across the southeast. Apparently did his assaults while on temp duty assignments. 110
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 01/05/2025Since the paper identified his address as near where I grew up, my curiosity got the better of me, and I looked for whatever I could find from other newspapers about him across time. Had an uncommon name. 100
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 16/04/2025I am having the hardest time wrapping my head around the idea that a onetime senator from Florida – Florida! – would say anything to dampen tourism. 281
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 07/04/2025Picked up something over the weekend. Thanks to the Florida Book Awards for recognizing my work. 020
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 05/04/2025Just saw an excellent show with the Violent Femmes and the Tallahassee Orchestra at the Word of South Festival. I have to say, though, some of Gen X men suck at concerts. Just talk, talk, talk. Shut up already. 010
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 22/03/2025Just finished this. Powerful work. Suggest it for all. 040
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 11/03/2025Feels like yet another thing we’re losing because a few greedy people won’t be happy until they vacuum up every last dollar. 040

Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 05/03/2025Some in Florida are floating the idea of getting rid of property taxes, the main source of revenue for localities. I’m no fan of high taxes, but I think we need some slogans explaining why these are needed. I’ll start. Property Taxes: Because garden hoses aren’t good for fighting fires. 141
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 04/03/2025I’ve been reading Christine Dunbar-Hester’s Oil Beach and liking it quite a bit. Lissa Wadewitz’s The Nature of Borders might also make for great discussion, too, since it deals with US-Canadian fishing laws and Native usages of the salmon fishery. 110

Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 21/02/2025My mother built into me a habit of waiting for the mail. She would say, “let’s wait for the mail to come,” before we would set off to go shopping or anything when I was a child. 010
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 21/02/2025Beyond the horror of this for these individuals, this is a cut off your nose to spite your face action in South Florida. So much of the service economy depends on Haitian workers down here. 000
Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 21/02/2025This hockey face-off tournament is good, but we have to admit it needs an asterisk until without being able (understandably) to have a Russian team. 000

Evan Bennett @epbhistorian.bsky.social · 19/02/2025The odd thing is the GOP in places like Florida have wholeheartedly embraced the toll model when it comes to highway construction. Not just as a revenue stream - mostly that -but as an argument for dealing with congestion. 110
