The book that helped was All The Light We Cannot See. V short chapters and very engaging.

And I have a good algorithm of mostly nice stuff- but it’s just the broken attention. Start short- short articles or chapters and build up. I love reading books - it’s like having a boxset in your pocket v something that scrambles your brain.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social re phones and books: I decided to read whenever I was about to scroll on my phone. Didn’t work until I found a book with v short chapters. Then I could re train myself to concentrate and now my attention span is much improved.

Yes the separation is so odd really. Where do they think we evolved and from what? We can only exist on this one planet, breathe its air, walk in its particular gravity, drink its water and eat its food. Oh the evolution/creation thing. Maybe that’s a big part of the issue.

1/2 This quote from Gus Speth in 2013 is tragically true. “I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address these problems.

I realise you’ve moved off this now- but I also think some sort of press overhaul would help stop the obfuscating of predominantly RW media about the cause of it. WWF (not the wrestling one) just posted that most articles dont mention the cause or the relevance of net zero.

Also - remove automatic AI searches (eg Google seems to default to AI) as this uses a huge amount of water that won’t be able to be spared.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social More trees planted in streets- reduces ground temperature significantly. Solar panel grants to help absorb extra electricity demands from air conditioning. White roofs like in Bermuda - to reflect sun and they also use the rainwater to drink (as no rivers there)

Whatever people think domestically, as a statesman on the world stage Keir Starmer was exemplary

I accept I’m not all over every element of his leadership and there are likely things I’ve missed. I just think the things he was achieving were kept pretty quiet, either their own bad PR or due to the media set-up in the UK.

Eos Counsell @eoscounsell.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Shocked Keir Starmer resigned. I know people didn’t like him because 🤷 but he got a lot done (not publicised well ) and was making great progress. I like Andy Burnham but I don’t think this was helpful or wise. Everything has to be instant these days. Thanks, TikTok *adjusts 1/2 moon glasses* 👵🏽

We’ll never know for sure either way as it’s an either/or thing. Your kids will have always found it beneficial, others v detrimental, and younger Gen we may never know.

Eos Counsell @eoscounsell.bsky.social · 14/06/2026

Fair play. I think there is a LOT of evidence of social media being harmful to mental health globally. That’s not to say banning it will be a silver bullet - and I’m sure your kids used it v constructively, but not everyone has such guidance/ wisdom. The suicides alone more than warrant a ban imo.

Eos Counsell @eoscounsell.bsky.social · 14/06/2026

Understood- I can see there are shades of grey as with everything, I just find as a parent whose kid doesn’t yet have a smartphone, the banning of social media for the whole peer group will cut out a whole heap of trouble. Yes some things may be missed but overall i think far better 4 mental health

It’s as though he’s being paid to disrupt and destabilise the UK. From Brexit to racism, misogyny and inciting riots. He’s a danger to this country and I’d really like to know who’s paying him and why. I think he’s a security threat. Divide and rule and get richer. That’s all he cares about.

you know the way "why did the Roman Empire fall" and "what are the causes of the First World War" are big questions that sort of function like Rorsharch tests, allowing people to debate ultimately inexplicable moments in history? "Why did no one stop Trump" a decent future shout for the third.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
