#MythologyMonday The old Welsh funerary custom of 'Hirwen-gŵd' is an odd practice, in which the body of the deceased would be hauled up and down a chimney using a system of rope pulleys.

#ScreenshotSaturday There are a lot of different ways to build a level... For this kind of natural environment, I tend to layer it 'bottom up' - after sculpting the terrain, I work from ground texture, to floor cover, to tree canopy, ending with the lighting and postfx pass.

It's my birthday today! And what better present than this gorgeous print of Blodeuwedd by artist Aled Thompson, that arrived in the post this morning! I love how savage and wild the imagery is, tapping into a very different side of the character than the quaint, floral depictions that we often see.

#WordsOnWednesday The island of Ynys Môn (Anglesey), off the north west coast of Wales, is home to many tales of myth and magic. One of these stories is that of Cath Palug, a monstrous feline who was one of the three great plagues of Ynys Môn.

#WordsOnWednesday Today is Owain Glyndŵr Day, commemorating the last native Prince of Wales, and his historic rebellion against the English. The Cistercian monastery of Strata Florida Abbey was an important focus of religious power at the time, as well as a major intellectual and literary centre.

#MythologyMonday The sorceress Ceridwen was the keeper of the Cauldron of Awen, source of all knowledge and inspiration. Some scholars suggest her origins lie in an earlier pagan goddess of prophecy, although others attribute her perceived divine status to more modern neo-pagan practices.

#WordsOnWednesday In the Third Branch of the Mabinogi, a cursed fog settles across the land of Dyfed, leaving it barren of all life. If you've ever seen 'dragon's breath' cloud inversions settle over the Welsh valleys, it's easy to understand where the inspiration for this story may have come from!
