Getting to read Phantom Tollbooth out loud to 5th graders 3x a day for a few weeks was the most fun I ever had as a teacher and the only time I ever really saw kids excited about anything we read. Kids can see through bullshit, so show them the books you actually love and convince them it matters.

Kids deserve the chance to get lost in a story, wrestle with a character, sit with an ending and read an entire book from beginning to end. We shouldn’t have to justify fiction by turning it into a vehicle for teaching something else. Reading literature matters on its own.

Cross-curricular learning has value, but not at the expense of literature. Fiction builds empathy and teaches students to read closely, grapple with ambiguity and understand perspectives beyond their own. Those skills are foundational to critical thinking and media literacy.

My husband used to teach fifth grade, and the curriculum required a weeks-long segment on the Oklahoma Land Rush. He always talked about how much better his students were doing when they studied fiction like The Phantom Tollbooth.

I know education has a lot to do with too few resources, but I will never stop saying there just isn’t enough fiction assigned in adopted curriculum. Kids need to read stories. And not just excerpts. Whole books.
