Abruzzo has genuine old growth beech forests - they’re UNESCO world heritage sites. It’s one of a very few places in Europe that hasn’t changed a ton in that regard - the megafauna species are still around or reintroduced too (wolves, bears, etc). whc.unesco.org/en/list/1133

I’ve never been anywhere with as many obviously enchanted forests as Abruzzo. This is a 600 year old beech tree (and it’s also very old companion) somewhere between Barrea and Scanno.
