NO ON MEASURE A (RIVERSIDE CO.) - This extends the existing Measure A sales tax indefinitely, locking in a pattern of transit disinvestment and sprawl and highway construction. Just 12% of Measure A in Western Riverside County goes to transit, while Metrolink is in crisis and transit is substandard.

This reminds me of OCTA saying that since OC Bus (which like VTA has kinda shit service) was at 100% ridership recovery every agency with a fiscal cliff including Metrolink must be horribly mismanaged.

Nonpartisan local elections keep the CA GOP on life support. On the one had, it forces them (for the most part) to run as sensible fiscally conservative moderates rather than MAGA nutjobs, on the other hand it helps them keep getting elected.

By my count, the Metrolink board is majority Republican despite the GOP being far from the majority in the region. Metrolink cuts were spearheaded by a small group of OC Republicans. Why do the rest of us let this happen?

While most of them are elected to nonpartisan local offices so it's hard to say, I think a majority of the Metrolink board are Republicans as well?

It's mostly OC Republicans pushing these cuts, so they know how to work strategically.

This is a super common commute pattern that IE agencies do basically nothing to do accommodate because transit service ends at county lines. No direct route and no fare or schedule coordination for transfers.

Kind of nuts that the agenda packet completely contradicts itself and nobody on the board called it out. Whether fares revenues go up or down is hugely consequential for next year!

This is what I'm talking about. Random dipshits who don't understand basic stuff like infrequent service having worse ridership and farebox recovery making consequential decisions for 20 M people. And Chaffee is one of the better people at OCTA! bsky.app/profile/cale...

So let me get this straight... 4 years after the only rail connection between CA's 2 largest cities closed for over a year, they're only getting around to starting a *study* of realignment, which will be done in 2034. Incredible incompetence here. www.latimes.com/california/s...
The famed railroad line along the San Clemente coast has found itself on the endangered list amid a relentless assault from rising seas and punishing surf.

Transportation experts have long spoken about the possibility of relocating the tracks in the area, but the California State Transportation Agency is expected to launch a study before year’s end examining what would go into potentially moving the rail line, according to Darrell Johnson, chief executive of the Orange County Transportation Authority.

Johnson said the study would likely take at least several months to complete.

Transportation planners previously said it could cost more than $5 billion to move the tracks inland. In September, high tides and powerful wave activity from Hurricane Marie buffeted the San Clemente coastline, temporarily halting Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink service after more erosion and slope damage was spotted near the train tracks.

“As a condition of work on the portion of rail line in San Clemente, the California Coastal Commission required a Long-Term Railroad Adaptation Study due by 2034,” according to a statement from the California State Transportation Agency.

The study has not yet launched, the agency added, and all options are on the table.

“There has been no decision made to relocate the portion of the rail line in San Clemente and it would be premature to identify a route, timeline, or cost before that study has concluded. Relocating a rail line that carries passenger, freight, and military traffic is a major, long-term undertaking that requires careful analysis of engineering, environmental impacts, community effects, cost, and funding, along with close coordination with rail owners, operators, and federal partners,” the agency said in a statement.

“In the meantime, protecting the existing line is essential to keeping trains running safely for the communities that rely on them.”

It's unreal how poorly California is governed relative to the size of our economy. We're going to tear out the copper wire on train service for a region of about 20 million people because our extremely dumb state thinks that Orange County Republicans should be able to veto mass transit for everyone.

Cutting weekend/off peak service, just as high gas prices are encouraging people who don’t commute on transit to ride, is extremely shortsighted.

Decades of disinvestment and austerity is actually a significant reason why stuff is so expensive! We don't invest in in-house staff, fund projects piecemeal, and do everything as a one-off, so everything costs more.

This sort of stuff makes me want to scream. The cost bloat is in *capital projects* not in operations! Capital projects are bloated because of a complex web of balkanized permitting processes, the byzantine and inconsistent nature of federal grant funding, and outsourcing talent to consultants.

I am not trying to criticize COVID-era education policies in my thread, I don't really want to litigate school closures. What I'm talking about was the lack of effort to make up for it once schools re-opened everywhere. No summer school, no extra support, no repeating grades.

Measure A's local return setup is also a massive subsidy to sprawl. Revenue from relatively transit-rich areas like Riverside and Corona are lumped in with the sprawl frontiers in San Jacinto, and Lake Elsinore that mix open lands with untransitable tract developments, a net transfer of wealth.

The SF school board is an extreme example but the "should we get rid of exam schools" question has been a hot topic in every city that has them. And the fiscal tradeoffs between serving high-achieving and low-achieving kids are real.

Working class Asian Americans and upper middle class white people who are progressive enough not to send their kids to private school concretely benefit from concentrating resources on "high-achieving" kids and both of these were an important part of the Mamdani coalition.

The other 2010s political current in education reform (briefly alluded to in the piece) was the push for charter schools and ed-tech. There's not a lot of evidence they work and these are essentially rent-seekers structurally aligned against the Left.

In San Francisco controversial stances on 8th grade algebra and selective schools basically nuked the progressive block citywide (there were also other factors). It's politically savvy to avoid emphasizing issues that divide your base.

Secondly and relatedly we're coming out of a decade of very divisive public debates on K-12 education. 2010s progressives made a lot of pushes for equity in schools that, without commenting on their merits, served as wedge issues. Leftists are cross-pressured issues like selective schools.

I think there's a couple of historic reasons the current Left is not focused on schools. The biggest one being that since the pandemic, I feel like society at large has given up on schools. We gave up on trying address learning loss, performance is declining, and no one cares - why should the Left?
