A huge influx of people of the past few days so HELLO! I'm Emme, modeller of marine habitats, mother of BathyCam, and lover of all things benthic 🤎 Thinking about starting a body doubling video call writing group (NE 🇨🇦) in mid Feb - anyone up for it? 🐙 🦑 🧪

Wouldn't it be cool if digitised sponge collections like this could include in-situ, freshly collected and spicule images! The world needs more taxonomists!!

look at this cute polychaete!! I love being on cruises when it's my job to just pick and sort stuff, like the associates from this Solenosmilia coral fragment collected in the Denmark Strait. 🐙🦑🧪 #MarineEcology

The evolution of BathyCam, my modular underwater camera system! V2 integrates a nav camera plus handheld controller allowing us to see the seabed in real time. In September we used BathyCam V2 to collect data across a soft coral garden in NL using a fishing vessel & crab hauler! #marineecology

No worries! I'll admit I'm at my limit with that question, as I haven't worked with cod or the modelling used to estimate the Canadian stocks. Cheers!

There has been a lot of conversation around the cod fishery here, I would direct you to this recent article from colleagues: theconversation.com/the-federal-...

The federal government has lifted the moratorium on Northern cod fishing after 32 years
The end of the Northern cod moratorium marks a pivotal moment for Newfoundland and Labrador’s fishing industry, which has grappled with the economic and social impacts of the moratorium for decades.

The soft coral garden at Funk island Deep Marine refuge - these were the first videos we captured in June 2024, I've been back twice to map more and it's much bigger than we first estimated! #Newfoundland is beautiful both above and below the ocean 🌊

Hey! They could be over geological periods but right now, these habitats are very diverse, check out this article: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Mesophotic coral ecosystems are threatened and ecologically distinct from shallow water reefs
Deep water reefs will not provide a refuge for shallow reef ecosystems.

Yea named after Funk Island which is in the refuge. The island has multiple bird colonies so it could be down to that 'funky' smell!
