Out mapping seagrass (Zostera marina) meadows in the Hvaler area in the Oslofjord. This is a highly brackish area, with large Ruppia meadows close to the Zostera meadows. And a lot of swans - sometimes almost 20 in a small area - eating large amount the Ruppia (some of the which are on the Red list)

Jeg har vært fagvitne i retten et par ganger (både i lagmannsretten og høyesterett). Og hvorfor er jeg der, hvorfor har saken havnet i retten? Jeg mener at det er fordi vi mangler regler, reglene er uklare eller kunnskapen er mangelfull. Regler, planer og kunnskap = tid og penger spart.

Not quite spring yet ❄️ it is still frost at night and my Oslofjord stations were mostly covered by ice when during my visit this weekend. But there are clear signs of spring - and “my” intertidals are soon ready for new studies and experiments 🥰

A tiny story from one HOT DAY in the Oslofjorden. Paper finally accepted: «Can filamentous algae intensify heat in intertidal rockweed beds?» 🌱🥵🌱 We found significantly higher temperature (up to 3.2°C) in filamentous algae aggregations than within rockweed patches and the water masses.

Oslofjorden har høyere nivåer av «evighetskjemikalier» enn mange andre steder. Det vil påvirker økosystemenes evne til å komme seg tilbake når vi nå forsøker å restaurere og reparere fjorden ved hjelp av rensing av næringssalter, vedtatte nullfiskeområder, restaurering og andre tiltak.

Vi vet at det er en del små fisk i fjorden. Oslofjorden har tapt toppredatorer, som torsk, og fått mer av de mindre fiskene (kalt mesopredatorer). Disse spiser opp sneglene som ellers holder tang, tare og ålegress fri for lurv. Så vi må få tilbake toppredatorer og balansen i systemet.

Thanks for paying attention. We have not species identified the “turf” in the aquarium. However, it looks much the same as the turf we have in the outdoor mesocosm basins, and everything outdoors belongs to Ectocarpus and Cladophora. So I have assumed Ectocarpus.

Let me talk about dulse (Palmaria palmata) og a #PhycologyFriday This red algae grows along the coast in many countries. It’s easiest collected in the intertidal zone. Dulse can be used in many ways – often dried, and as a slightly nutty flavour. Dulse contains protein, fat, and vitamin A.
