Day 1 of the strike by the workers of UCU Edinburgh against the manufactured deficit (which is not really a deficit), and against a senior management earning millions while staff disappear and education suffers. Solidarity against this parasitical form of management of our higher education.

I'm not holding my breath, not least because the author of the worst of these polices, Yvette Cooper, is still in government, and her successor in the Home Office, Shabana Mahmood, has defended and extended her draconian anti-protest measures. And yes, these measures really are mad and bad.

It's not just that we had two wasted years under Keir Starmer - years in which, with a vast majority and quite a lot of goodwill - he could have turned this country around. On crucial issues, we had two years of spiralling backwards, towards a very dark place. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

It's not as if Burnham and Miliband are radicals. It's not as if the UK has stopped providing weapons, surveillance and logistical support to a government pursuing genocide. But at least we begin to see some acknowledgement that it's not mad and bad to care about the lives of Palestinians.

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

I don't think we disdain the center-right enough. First, they rode nativist populist tigers to power to get their tax cuts and deregulation; Then, they lost control of their own parties to those tigers; Now, they sit in lucrative jobs as columnists writing about how it's all the left's fault.

You might ask yourself “whose side are they on?”. You might not like the answer, but it becomes hard to deny. So why? Why, when we know that appeasing the far right empowers and builds it, do they keep doing it, alienating their base and helping to deliver the country to Reform or Restore?

So the favourite obsession of the far right, being weaponised by US billionaires to push us towards their technofascist dystopia, is repeatedly legitimised by a Labour government. Other concerns, including the longstanding concerns of the left, are vilified and delegitimised.

“…would be offered help according to a “holistic” assessment of their needs” Can’t think where I’ve heard that before…🤔 Oh wait… And we know where that leads.
The Health Department's minister of state for secondary care, Karin Smyth, said during a Tuesday (13 January) Commons debate, the Government has supported plans to move away from the "medical intervention model" when providing care for trans and non-binary young people.
Instead, it planned on moving towards a "holistic approach" to treatment based on evidence provided by the Cass Review - a controversial independent analysis into health care for trans youngsters in the UK.

Last year we suffered through a Surrey manager's "lecture" about how we must be nicer to fascists, and stop being "snob". It was rubbish and shows how SMTs across the UK have no clue about who their workers are. A university that doesn't stand up to fascism is not worth defending or working for.
