Academia is not a woke space. Beyond superficial claims, it's very much governed by the same old structures of oppression present in wider society (racism, misogyny, ableism, queerphobia, classism etc) further entrenched by neoliberal logics

It seems the Tories and the Telegraph are teaming up to try and rid Britain of disability by taking away people’s safety net, whilst blaming them for all Britains problems. It’s cruelty personified. It is the very worst of humanity and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Like many others, I had unfortunately called the government's delirious "let it rot" policy - we'll see further collapse before we see any improvement. And unless @ucu.org.uk takes back its role and calls a national, open-ended #strike blocking all Unis in solidarity, nothing will improve.

the report, from professionals in the relevant fields, says that ADHD and autism is under-diagnosed and people affected by that are not given enough support in an appropriate and timely manner. but that’s not the result the government wants, so that means the spin apparatus has chosen this form.

Many people - politicians, doctors, parents - see the neurodiversity movement & feel the threat it poses to their worldview. If some minds are different, if some of us are fucked by the school system as it stands - totally shamed & brutalised by its inadequacy - that requires radical change.

Wes Streeting is the plastic reason why Burnham can try no matter what pantomime, but we will still hate this Labour party. Here he is feeding the new far right culture war front. The goal is justifying cuts to support and set artificial limits to diagnoses to hit some arbitrary targets of saving.

Telling that Wes Streeting considers someone diagnosed with ADHD has been 'written off'. Also telling that the government commissioned a review in the face of independent reviews finding there is no overdiagnosis, just increased awareness & historic underdiagnosis of girls & women.

The government’s response to students’ demands has been pathetic: it first blamed LFI, delegitimising the movement and focusing on “urban violence”. It then offered dialogue and an online “grievance book” to collect complaints, with no clear funding commitments.

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

The Health Department's minister of state for secondary care, Karin Smyth, said during a Tuesday (13 January) Commons debate, the Government has supported plans to move away from the "medical intervention model" when providing care for trans and non-binary young people.
Instead, it planned on moving towards a "holistic approach" to treatment based on evidence provided by the Cass Review - a controversial independent analysis into health care for trans youngsters in the UK.
