I got a cool shot of a thundercloud a few nights ago in downtown Lafayette!

Sculpin tank is ready for new arrivals this summer! Two remain to keep the tank cycled and they got the penthouse suite!
Two multi-chamber tanks on a wire rack. They are both connected to a sump below that is also connected to a chiller. The top tank contains water and one large chamber with a pile of cichlid rocks with holes in them. The other tank on the bottom sits empty to dry out.

Spring is here! Enjoy these photos I took on Monday 🥰
A monarch caterpillar s is purged vertically on the back side of a stem and is peering around the right edge. Its antenna are tilted toward the right as if they're blowing in the wind.A black and white garden spider is sitting in its web, facing the camera. Camera. The characteristic zigzag web pattern can be seen.An Eastern swallowtail chrysalis precariously hanging by a thread from a fennel stem.A spider mold hanging from a diagonal branch. This sun is coming up behind it and it is backlit in front of a dark background of trees. It looks like it's climbing the branch.

I wouldn't be here without NSF. I've been close to walking away several times. Each time I thought, "let's just see". I applied for the PRFB and got it! This kick started my research program and increased my competitiveness on TT apps. In short, it motivated me to keep going.

We had a big flash flood yesterday. Here are some of the critters I found in the water.
Two snails look over the edge of the grass blade they are on, seemingly checking out the water below.A little brown skink rests in the water on a grass blade with only its head poking out.A dragonfly fell in the water and is floating on top. I rescued it right after this pic.A spider rests on a very small grass blade that is protruding above the water line.

So, I saw fire ant rafts today. You never realize how many colonies are around until it floods. Kind of gross but also kind of cool that they can do this.

This is what 5 in. of rain in 2 hours looks like. There's a road under the water.
A large standing body of water. There is a house, dry, on the left and a phone pole, fence, and Greenfield on the right. The right. As far as you can see is water down the road.

Yay, my students are headed to the field tomorrow! We were all ready to go and then were on hold due to an IACUC misunderstanding. It's March but the wheels are finally moving on this thing.
Graduate student Jonathan is standing on the muddy bank of a pond wearing waders and a hoodie with mud on it. He's holding a green minnow trap in his right hand and a small fish in his left hand. Another student can be seen in the background pulling in a different minnow trap.
