I finished reading Rashid Khalidi's young adult adaptation of his The Hundred Years' War on Palestine. It was an excellent and accessible read, full review attached. I was provided a free digital copy of this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for a review.
your review for:
Palestine: A Primer by Rashid I. Khalidi
5.0
Thank you to NetGalley and Godwin Books for providing an ARC, all thoughts are my own.

Palestine: A Primer is an adaptation of Rashid Khalidi’s The Hundred Years' War on Palestine for a Young Adult audience and is a must read for teens and adults seeking to learn about the history of displacement, occupation, and colonization of Palestine and her people by the Zionist settler colonial project.

This book is highly accessible for all readers and Khalidi’s choice to weave his family’s personal history throughout the book helps to ground the history of Palestine in the personal. Despite covering over one hundred years of the history of Palestine, this book remains accessible to audiences unfamiliar with the Palestinian cause and never gets lost in the weeds.

Khalidi’s Palestine: A Primer is an extensively researched, accessible, and well-written introduction to the history of the Palestinian struggle for self determination. I recommend this book to both teenagers and adults who want to learn about Palestinian history particularly as it affects the present day.

Everyone who read the other Prairieland thing needs to read this.
I wanted to speak to a reader who is convinced of the moral seriousness of the fight against fascism but who is uneasy about the methodology the Prairieland defendants used, to attempt to invoke their moral sympathies for the defendants who face life sentences and their cause of ending immigration detention into a critical and perhaps even abolitionist attitude toward the terrorism statutes that pre-date Trump and even 9/11. That essay was rejected a few days ago. I assumed well, I guess it wasn’t very good. And then I read the Hancox-Li piece and realized no, the editors simply had a completely different understanding of how to handle the Prairieland sentences from within the anti-fascist coalition.

My ego was assuaged, but I was furious. Furious enough to get up this morning and decide I needed to articulate why.

Ironically, I was enraged by Hancox-Li’s piece in precisely the same way I understood her to be enraged by the Prairieland defendants themselves–here was someone who I considered (and consider) a political ally in an existential fight making a strategic misstep that I thought detracted from our shared political goals. Prairieland is an example of dramatic overreach by the opposition in the deployment of state violence (because prison sentences are, indeed, a form of violence, if less spectacular than public executions) by an expressly ideologically-motivated judge against a set of reasonably sympathetic defendants. Rather than leverage outrage at the sentences to either build political will to fight Trump’s use of antiterrorism laws or draw attention to the underlying abuses the Prairieland defendants themselves sought to call attention to (what was happening in Prairieland that made them feel the need to take such extreme measures), Hancox-Li chose to use the Prairieland case to attempt to impose internal discipline by criticizing the strategy of individuals who share her goal of abolishing ICE.

Many many people in this country cannot recognize Islamophobia because they are swimming so deeply in it on a daily basis and have so internalized it that it isn't actually legible to them as racism. It's why it's so casually deployed in a way that other forms of racism in the country are not.

This question was invented by the Israelis as a way of pushing the goal-post in their negotiations with the PLO. First it was do you recognize that Israel exists? The PLO eventually did. Then it was its right to exist, then its right to exist as a Jewish State. Which no one will do will recognize.

During the ratification debates, Senator Cowan took aim
at the Roma people too, characterizing them as undeserving
of birthright citizenship because they “wander[ed] in
gangs,” “infest[ed] society,” and “impos[ed] upon the simple
and weak everywhere.”49 And again, Senator Conness dismissed Senator Cowan’s prejudices: “The only invasion of
Pennsylvania within my recollection was an invasion very
much worse and more disastrous to the State, and more to
be feared and more feared, than that of Gypsies. It was an
invasion of rebels [at Gettysburg].
