To expand on my fic advice: Genuinely genuinely write for Yourself first and foremost. Write what you want to see, what speaks to you, what makes your heart sing. A creative hobby is what you make it and you are more than allowed to have fun with it- which is why i say do whatever You Want

Every time I share photos of fireflies in my backyard, I get folks lamenting not seeing fireflies anymore. If this is you, depending on where you live, you can get more fireflies! About 1/3 of our NA species are threatened, but it's pretty easy to help them out especially in these areas. Here's how:

Info-graphic map from Xerces showing where fireflies live in the upper 48 US states and Canada.
Figure 5 - Geographic variation in firefly species richness with the number of endemic firefly species by state and province.* Figure 6 - Firefly (family Lampryidae) distributions by Level 3 Ecoregion.
The image shows that most fireflies are found in eastern and central US states and Canada, but there are pockets of them found out west, too.
* Note that this map (Figure 5) does not include 35 newly described Photuris species by Lloyd (2018).

GET MORE FIREFLIES: NORTH AMERICA
If you have any sort of influence on the land you live on, consider these tips!
If you don’t have any influence (and even if you do), talk to your community members nicely and yell at your lawmakers about dark sky initiatives, habitat protection, and flipping off yard pesticide treatments!
- Fireflies need habitat! When applicable and when able: mow less, leave taller vegetation, plant native plants, leave “messy” areas with leaf litter, sticks, logs. Firefly larvae need moist areas to hunt and live in for up to two years before becoming adults.
- Reduce or discontinue outdoor lights at night! Discontinue decorative and accent lighting; use timers, dimmers, or motion activated lights. Turn lights off when you aren’t using them. Fight for dark sky initiatives locally and ways to reduce light pollution.
- Don’t use pesticides, eliminate lawn treatments, including grub killing treatments (fireflies spend their first stage of life on/in the ground). Mosquito lawn treatment companies are scams that do more harm than they do mosquito killing. Stop Touching Grass with this nasty stuff.
BONUS: This stuff all really helps other wildlife as well as humans
that live in these places! Do you love More Info? Go to xerces dot org
and search “firefly” to get all the good stuff!

Inserted photo of a firefly larvae with text: WHO’S THAT WEIRD GUY?
It’s a firefly larvae! Most spend 1-2 years on or in the ground in moist areas, being badass predators of squishy prey items such as slugs, snails, and more. This little bro is trying to help your garden!

Bluesky is making more bad moderation decisions. Flagging entire accounts will severely censor artists and also makes it even harder to actually use as intended even if you do what to not see nsfw (if entire account even text posts is labeled how do you know what is/isn’t nsfw until viewing?).

PSA: Bluesky's new auto-tagging moderation stuff is a disaster. Disable it. Go into Settings on the Bluesky site and enable adult content and set everything to Warn at most, which makes posts opt-in. Hide just vanishes posts. Then go into Advanced/Bluesky Mod Service and do the same on everything.

I'll say what Bluesky fails to address in v1.122 They've rolled out a new "adult content" tag applied on an entire account, hiding all their posts from users, including text posts, even if they may be SFW This update, while well-intentioned, defeats the whole purpose of the content filters system

bsky too quiet? missing comments? not seeing posts from spicy artists? check your moderation settings and your bsky filters if you haven't configured these before, many of these will be set to hide as defaults

When I was a kid, I would brush off compliments and demean my art until my art teacher took me aside and told me to never do that shit again. Always take the compliment. If they were insincere, that shits on them. Do not make yourself small for others. It's insane how much of that changed my life.

You can read the full text of the bill here: www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c... Thank you to @authorsabb.bsky.social for these slides and the alt text, which you can also share on their insta: www.instagram.com/authorsagain...

Slide 1: a blue graphic with an outline of the United States. Red and white text reads: Call. National Book Banning Bill Proposed in US House of Reps. Tell your rep: Vote no on H.R. 7661.

Slide 2: a blue and red graphic with white text that reads: House Republicans have introduced a bill to effectively grant the federal government decision-making power over what books make it into the library. Misleadingly called the "Stop the Sexualization of Children Act," H.R. 7661 is a national-level book banning bill that would ban any book that, according to the bill's language, "(ii) involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism." This means any book about a trans person or the trans experience would be banned from every public school in the United States.

Slide 3: a blue and red graphic with white text that reads: The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce. If you are represented by one of the members of this committee listed below, they need to hear from you.
Rep. Kevin Kiley, California (CA-3) (Chair) - entering vulnerable election cycle
Rep. Mary E. Miller, Illinois (Vice Chair)
Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, Pennsylvania
Rep. Burgess Owens, Utah
Rep. Michael A. Rulli, Ohio
Rep. James C. Moylan, Guam - entering vulnerable election cycle
Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, Pennsylvania - entering vulnerable election cycle
Rep. Mark Harris, North Carolina
Rep. Mark B. Messmer, Indiana
Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, Oregon, Ranking Member
Rep. Jahana Hayes, Connecticut
Rep. Summer L. Lee, Pennsylvania
Rep. John W. Mannion, New York
Rep. Frederica S. Wilson, Florida
Rep. Alma S. Adams, North Carolina
Rep. Adelita Grijalva, Arizona

Slide 4: a blue graphic with red and white text that reads: If you are represented by the congresspeople listed above: Call your reps. Tell them they must oppose this bill at every turn. It is egregiously unconstitutional, targets ideas based on ideological disapproval, and misleads parents and the public about the content of children's books. It does nothing to protect kids and will badly harm education. It will tie school material funding into knots and hurt anyone who is a library materials vendor, regardless of content. If you are a bookseller, librarian, or author, tell them your livelihood depends on the next generation of readers.

Canada is about to end private digital conversation — Bill C-22

Bill C-22 would force every messaging app in Canada to build a backdoor — and track all your activity for one year. Apple says no. Signal says they'll leave.
