Chûya would be lying if he said he hadn’t been expecting that. And yet, seeing the expression on Ranpo’s face morph into amusement the moment he laid eyes on him had an immediate effect.

“Oh, c’mon.” Exited his lips alongside an exasperated sigh.

“I’ve said nothing.” Ranpo replied, grinning from ear to ear in a way which was both insufferable and (to Chûya’s dismay) adorable.

“Yet.”

“Yet.” At least, Ranpo repeating said word was an admission. One Chûya didn’t have time to relish, due to what came shortly after. “I mean, I still can’t believe your solution was punching your way outta the mystery. Like, not even rookies do that.”

And, there it was. Well. At least it wasn’t the literal first thing Ranpo had said to him-- sort of, since everything had actually led to that.

“Well, what can I say. I don’t like to play games, y’know.” Nothing new there.

“A shame, really. We could’ve had so much fun together, Mr Fancy Hat.” And there, Ranpo still seemed amused but not in a way that suggested he was trying to get a laugh at his expense. Which made Chûya think he might actually mean it. Or perhaps there was no ‘might’ and he did indeed mean it; he was just that on edge after having spent his formative years dealing with Dazai’s bullshit.

“See, I’d rather play when the stakes aren’t high as fuck, ‘kay?” Chûya doubted he was going anywhere by saying so, but…

… but then, Ranpo said something that changed his mind completely.

“Hm? We could arrange that.”

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”
