This Regenerate Cascadia project featured in Ma Earth's Round 3 funding is the @cofoodyvr.bsky.social garden in Vancouver! A wild and wonderful intersection of 10 years of my life and my brand new career in bioregionalism 🥰🥳

Wowww it has been so fun pre-camping with some of the team this weekend! This announcement post for #dwebcampcascadia was made in front of an epic view of Saanich Inlet with Salt Spring on the horizon. Blessed to be working with these people, in this place 💞
A scene of the shore, ocean and islands - the view looking northeast over the Saanich Inlet from the coast of Vancouver Island, near Bakerview, BC. The southern peak of Salt Spring island is visible in the far horizon.

There was a huge X-class solar flare yesterday on the Sun! You can see it on the right-hand limb in these SDO images. I find it so neat that we live next to, and can study, a star. We take it for granted that it's "the Sun" and it's always in the sky, but there is a star and it is RIGHT THERE. 🔭

A quote from adrienne maree brown is set against a backdrop of the galaxy, with stars among black sky and some galactic clouds.

The quote reads "Art is not neutral. It either upholds or disrupts the status quo, advancing or regressing justice. We are living now inside the imagination of people who thought economic disparity and environmental destruction were acceptable costs for their power. It is our right and responsibility to write ourselves into the future. ALL ORGANIZING IS SCIENCE FICTION."

adrienne maree brown is an activist, visionary, and author of several books, including Emergent Strategy, which this quote comes from. Emergent Strategy is (quote from her website) "adrienne maree brown’s first solo book, and it has become a movement bestseller since its release in 2017. It is a guidebook for getting in right relationship with change, using our own nature and that of creatures beyond human as our teachers."

My spare copies of #hospicingmodernity have arrived! I'm starting a reading group to work through it together. This book is an invitation to different ways of thinking, feeling, and ultimately being, in the face of the decline of how-things-have-been.
Two copies of the book Hospicing Modernity by Vanessa Machado de Oliveira are face-up, one atop another, resting on a slatted wooden bench scattered with fallen cherry blossoms and petals. The shade cast from the back of the bench leaves the books half in sun, half in shade.

Here's a remix of Google's AI summary of the book's focus:

The concept of Hospicing Modernity is that modernity, with its emphasis on expansion, colonialism, resource extraction, and consumerism, has created a system that is fundamentally out of balance and harmful to the planet and its inhabitants.

The book explores the "5 modern-colonial e's": Entitlements, Exceptionalism, Exaltation, Emancipation, and Enmeshment.

Machado emphasizes the importance of recognizing the suffering inherent in the current system, the need to accept impermanence and change, and advocates for a gradual disengagement from the unsustainable patterns of modern life, encouraging readers to re-evaluate their values, behaviors, and belief systems.

A magnificent upgrade to the fungal canopy on this nurse log at the #cofoodyvr garden Anyone up to ID it? 🤔 my PictureThis app doesn't do fungi #fungifriends #gardenersofthegalaxy
Tiers of fungi protrude from the top and sides of an upright log, about 16 inches tall. Behind the log is an empty raised bed, and it sits among decaying mulch and leaves. The fungi is a multitude of shades of foresty brown and green, with hints of burgundy, Grey, and yellow.

With all of these recent felt #earthquakes, many people are asking "does this mean the big one is coming?". These earthquakes are not connected - some are shallow, some deep, all are on different faults and even different tectonic plates. They are far from the locked subduction fault. So no... ⚒️🧪
Map showing the locations of recent felt earthquakes in southwestern British Columbia. Earthquakes are colour-coded by time over the past month and circle size is based on magnitude. The largest was M5 (offshore) and other felt earthquakes ranged from M2.5 to M4.7.
