The White Sox have a chance to clinch a playoff series in front of their home fans for the first time in 120 years. Bizarre history facts aside, it would be a chance to reward an audience that has been essential to the team taking itself seriously. chicago.suntimes.com/white-sox/20...

White Sox anticipating raucous crowd, seek to clinch first postseason-series victory at home since 1906
Sox players already anticipated a boisterous response from a fan base that endured a brutal rebuild, but a 2-0 lead in the ALDS offers a chance at substantial franchise history.

Do their actions merit impeachment? Yes. Many times over. Would impeachment weaken them, and reduce their ability to abuse power? Yes. At minimum by taking up time and attention. Would it stop valuable lawmaking from happening in Congress? No. And the White House is breaking laws. So... why not?

Removal after impeachment would be better, yes, and there are enough anti-Constitution Republicans in the Senate that convicting Trump, Hegseth, Vought, etc. is unlikely. But why would that make letting crimes slide, and acting like there's nothing wrong, better than investigating and exposing?

Normalization is treating the president stealing from taxpayers to buy campaign ads and offer bribes to voters like it's just another day. Normalization is reacting with "won't work" or "polls poorly," and not "resign immediately or you'll be removed, we exist because of a revolution against that."

Trump’s insider trading is, on its own, the worst corruption scandal in US history, with $$$ dwarfing Teapot Dome. So are Trump’s bribes-for-pardons. So is the Qatar bribe plane. So is all the Saudi money he (and Kushner) have pocketed. And the ballroom. And more. Each alone would be the worst.

Munetaka Murakami's game-changing power keys White Sox' Game 1 victory in ALDS
Saturday in Cleveland was exactly the sort of low-scoring affair that could be determined by a single swing from an elite power hitter, and Munetaka Murakami delivered that swing for the Sox.

Did the White Sox run into an embarrassing double play, or were they victims of a statistical anomaly?
The Sox ran themselves out of the sixth inning on Saturday in a weird-looking play, but the true weird part might have been that Tommy Pham's blast didn't clear the Progressive Field wall.

Then there’s mobile sports betting, which I think is an absolute scourge on society. www.liberalcurrents.com/portraits-of...
The old Vegas adage that "the house always wins" is a warning to gamblers whatever their luck to cut their losses or take their winnings and leave the betting floor before this statistical fact of nature asserts itself. In other words, get out while you can. And that physical space used to mean something. Once upon a time, sports betting was confined to Vegas, and gambling in general was the province of geographically defined locations like reservation casinos and hotel resorts. But Pearson's experience is what happens when the house comes to you.

There's a grim circularity to betting apps aping the push notification tools of the social media giants considering how social media platforms perfected their own dopamine distribution systems by turning feeds, likes, and comments into a slot machine interaction. The stories of how these platforms and apps have affected true addicts and problem gamblers are harrowing. Take Adam, a 33-year-old Massachusetts man whose story was reported by Patrick Madden and WBUR last year:With the DraftKings and FanDuel apps on his phone, Adam could bet on multiple games at once. Over time, his wagers got more frequent and riskier as he tried to win the money back.
When he was out with his girlfriend, hed repeatedly excuse himself - sometimes to a restroom - to go use his phone.
"What I was doing was checking scores and putting in more bets, things of that sort," said Adam. "I would be up at all hours of the night
- betting on this sport, that sport, sports in other countries that I knew nothing about."
One night in February 2024, as the gambling losses piled up, he decided to put everything he had left on a single Bruins game.
"I walked into our bedroom where she was sleeping and I woke her up," he said. Boston had lost. What happens to our country as this cohort of men age into what should be their peak earning years and then into retirement? What will our society and economy look like then? The financial risks are self-evident to the outside observer, but gambling addiction and the toll taken by losing also contribute to depression and suicide.

But instead of fighting what is clearly an emerging crisis, we have some of the biggest names in professional sports acting as spokespeople for DraftKings and Kalshi.
LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal promote DraftKings. Omnipresent ESPN personality Pat McAfee promotes FanDuel. Giannis Antetokounmpo isn't just a spokesperson for Kalshi, he's a shareholder. The only winners in America's burgeoning gambling crisis are the companies and the already super-rich athletes willing to leverage their status as heroes to millions of fans to hook a generation of young men on a devastating habit.

Man, imagine you're minding your own business, getting kind of drunk with your friends at a picturesque brewery in Maine, when suddenly John Roberts walks by and you get to start heckling him. Must have felt incredible. That's the dream. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...
The chief justice used to preside over a Supreme Court whose members were afforded more privacy and freedom than many other public officials. Once, years ago, Mr. Lipson and the chief justice found themselves up the peninsula from Port Clyde without a car, Mr. Lipson recalled in an interview. So he stuck out his thumb by the side of the road and a pickup truck pulled over. He and the nation’s top jurist hopped in the back and hitchhiked back to town.

Now, Mr. Lipson said, he is cautious about introducing his friend to strangers. This year, on an outing to nearby Monhegan Island, people recognized the chief justice as he walked by a brewery and started to chant: You should be ashamed.

I would say this: I don't care what you think about trans people. The essence of America is that people here get to live their lives however they want, as long as they're not hurting anyone else. You don't get a vote on that. Trans people aren't hurting you, so leave them alone.
