Oh great, so now we're just completely giving up on not eating plastics and we're going to *checks notes* literally eating plastics. Can't foresee any problem with that. Nope. Brilliant. Let's dive right in! #plastics www.theguardian.com/food/2026/au...

I'm looking for some extra work this summer so if anyone has anything - e.g. remote research (especially London archives or Cambridge area), transcription, editing, proofing, etc, or knows of anyone looking, then feel free to let me know!

While it may be tempting to read my posts and return to your book (all the while thinking 'let's hope it doesn't happen at my uni'), I do think this storm is coming for all of us in one way or another in the Humanities. 4/?

Northumbria's announcement (30 people to go by end of July, 10 of whom from Humanities) is maybe less egregious than Exeter's, but the pattern is the same: Humanities are disproportionately targeted for reasons that do not align with a rational look at the situation (student staff ratios) 3/?

... This comes after a fight over pensions which resulted in frozen pay for those of us who chose to stay in TPS and a particularly difficult round of voluntary redundancies which resulted in the premature departure of key members of staff who served as mentors to many of us 2/?

Exeter, Hertfordshire, & Northumbria: all after marks in & before the end of the financial year. We NEED someone to give a shit about #UKHE, @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social. All VCs care about are covenants; their shorttermist fragmented cuts accumulate to the UK losing a sector it can't afford losing.

If you asked me, off the top of my head, to name a non-Oxbridge university in England synonymous with excellence in the Humanities - I would probably think of Exeter first. This feels like a very deliberate, targeted and ideological Bonfire of the Humanities

And many institutions have failed to increase teaching and physical capacity along with this. So you have staff being responsible for vastly increased numbers of students, all crammed into lecture theatres, and neither group getting what they deserve.

Knowledge & understanding grow in university settings when experts disagree with each other, testing each others' claims, adducing different evidence & positing alternative scenarios. That's how change happens. In this thread, I suggest that we take a different approach to that featured here. 1/x
