This is an issue the Harrell/council budget explicitly created this year by assuming a $175M starting deficit in 2027 and funding a huge expansion of things like encampment sweeps and graffiti removal, largely with one-time funds. That's magical thinking and budgets aren't magic.

Unclear if Strauss was ruling out any fund transfers within the city or just long-term transfers, but this is part of the budget reality I wrote about on PubliCola today: Any council member who wants to restore cuts has to figure out how to pay for them within a balanced budget.

only one way to settle this: Put flock cameras IN each Council Member's home, in the police chief's home and ones watching every cop's home in Seattle. Make THOSE cameras fully accessible via public access. THEN, let the SPD put cameras wherever they want. otherwise, who's watching the watchers?

SPD is not being cut, of course, but they did take some reductions in long-vacant civilian positions while adding 66 net officers for the Harrell-era goal of 1,250 total cops. SPD's budget is the only budget to massively expand, thanks mostly to new six-figure starting salary for cops.

(There are cameras specifically at Seattle Center and the mayor's budget adds one mobile camera there. Using camera footage from businesses and individuals is literally a noncontroversial, basic investigative tactic SPD uses all the time.)
