I can barely be arsed at this point. Profile to come? I just miss my people from the smoking, bird-shaped crater who didn't move over to Mastodon. elizarde/k2cuss2/EElliottKnits, in case you're wondering who the latest weirdo who followed you is.

To be fair, the wake was organized by friend's other brothers, who were probably overwhelmed & not thinking everything through, so I'll add: If you're planning something like this and it's all a bit much, it's okay to accept help from someone who's less grief-stricken & can think about these things.

People went out to the cousin on the sidewalk to bring her food and drink and keep her company, but that situation should not have arisen. People also offered to carry her chair up the stairs into the venue, but someone pointed out that if there was a fire, she could not have gotten out quickly.

A million steep, rickety stairs to the bathroom means my knee fucking hates me and will hurt for a week, and I know there were people in worse shape than I who may not have been able to navigate that staircase. *Not just because we're old, obvs: always think about accessibility. Please. 2/2

Went to a wake for an old, beloved friend this weekend, and pls take note: People, we are too damn old to have a wake in a non-accessible venue. 1 mourner with MS was stuck on the sidewalk. Friend's brother, whom he cared for for years, is paraplegic & so couldn't come because he couldn't get in.

(Also, I would be way less annoyed about the weight sniping if I weren't so interested in the story otherwise: if I thought it was 100% crap, I'd just toss it aside with an 'oh, well.')

No no no! Don't feel bad! Not all recommendations work out--I know I've recommended books to you that you've thought, "Really? You like this? Huh. Okay." That's how it goes. Your book recs are way more hit than miss. I'll take this recommendation and thank you! It does look right up my alley.

You are most welcome. It's so disappointingly unimaginative, too. I don't expect a revelatory work of art in a mystery novel, but must we really trot out all the tired sexist & general body-judging tropes? Can we not imagine something different? Or at least leave out the gratuitous stone-flinging?

In. deed. It was available at the library, and I was willing to give her another chance, especially as I find the stories otherwise interesting, but I'm about to rage-return it less than halfway through. The sniping is just so very unnecessary, and has exactly nothing to do with the story.

I have the same problem with the Vera novels. You know, you're not exactly striking a blow for feminism if you create a smart, no-bullshit, female main character & then harp on about how fat she is, what & how much she eats, and the general sadness of her singlehood. Fucking knock it off. Do better.

Once again trying to get into an Elly Griffiths novel; once again growing increasingly annoyed at the constant references to the main character's weight, how it's a mystery anyone finds her attractive, how amazing & unlikely it is that 'overweight' people in general might find 'attractive' partners.

Well, damn. That's very sad news. I only met her once--at jonmc & pips' wedding in Vegas--and she was indeed absolutely delightful: kind and funny and so thoughtful. Cleaned up at baccarat on her first night, though she'd never even played before. Rest well, Jan.

Of course, by "and so couldn't follow me home," I really mean, "and so I didn't have to keep riding until a couple of stops past where he disembarked and then catch another bus back." I was pissed off, not suicidal.

Did it feel good to do that? Oh, hell, yes. Was I relieved to my core that he got off the bus before me & so couldn't follow me home? Also yes. Did anyone in the bus lineup say a damned thing? No, they did not.

"I have to know, has that ever really worked for you?" "What?" Utter bafflement & discomfort that I'm actually talking to him. "Have you ever yelled out, 'Nice tits!' and the woman has said, 'Oh, my, you're so charming and handsome! I must have sex with you!" "Bitch." "Yeah, I thought not."

That thread has me thinking about this incident: Heading home from work, walking down to the end of the line for my bus. Some rando yells, "Hey lady! Nice tits!" I stop, turn around, walk back to him. "What did you say?" "I was just being friendly!" Ah, yes. That old chestnut. ...

Nice! We're going to our local fair tomorrow. Apparently there's not as much livestock as there used to be, which, given avian flu, is prob. for the best, though it does mean missing the giant horse. OTOH, our community garden has some entries & our kids' gardening program made vegetable geese!

Agreed. The most useful thing I learned about making salsa fresca is to salt & drain the tomatoes, thus concentrating their tomato-ness. Weirdly for a tomato-salter, I'd never done that. Thanks, J. Kenji López-Alt! (It's this, but pulsed in the food processor: www.seriouseats.com/classic-pico... )

Even one of BOP's conservative friends could see the sense of it. Beyond the 'basic human decency' aspect, which he freely acknowledged, he pointed to the insane inefficiency of the current system--the expensive teams of lawyers, bureaucrats & middlemen--which fiscal conservatives should hate

Yes! There's also my other favourite: Is this checkup covered by my insurance? Yes. Are you sure? I can't afford a bill for this. Definitely. 3 wks later: SURPRISE! We called it a 'first visit assessment', not a checkup. Not covered. That'll be $300. No, we won't be taking your calls at this time.

Another thing I don't miss about my time in the US: The annual "oh gods what ACA insurance plan covers our local hospital & might also allow us to get check-ups this year" anxiety surge. The deliberate, baroque construction of mazes of bureaucracy just to access basic health care is fucking sadistic

Hard agree. The first time I drove up to Asheville, I kept thinking, "These mountains even *feel* old, like they have seen some serious shit. No wonder there are so many legends about them." I love the Rockies, but my main feeling with them is, "Look at that! Another stunning vista!"
