I made it home from #QuakeCon 2026 ... and so did my "DOOM chainsaw" -- a McCulloch Eager Beaver 2.0. Thanks to @thattomhall.bsky.social, Adrian Carmack, John Carmack, and @johnromero.bsky.social for what I anticipated when I got this off of eBay nearly 20 years ago. Yeah, I played the long game. 😆
Tom Hall signing my DOOM chainsaw at my table in the QuakeCon 2026 BYOC hallMy DOOM chainsaw resting on my table in the QuakeCon 2026 BYOC, signed by all four founding members of id Software. The three other founders of id Software watch in glee as I pretend to chop Tom Hall's head off (It was Tom's idea!) with my DOOM chainsaw at QuakeCon 2026's id Software Founders Photo Op.A handwritten letter, on tractor feed paper, that I left in my luggage to and from QuakeCon 2026, which reads:

Dear Friendly Neighborhood TSA Agent:

Yes, there is a chainsaw in my luggage. But rest assured, it is nonfunctional. I bought it on eBay over 20 years ago and it was just as nonfunctional then as it is now. I have not packed the chain, as it serves no purpose, and there has not been fuel in its tank in over 20 years either. But just to be extra sure, two weeks ago I immersed it in hot water to clean out any possible residual fuel that somehow, some way could have survived over two decades.

You may be wondering _why_ I have a chainsaw in my luggage - the answer is a bit dorky but here it is: I am a big fan of the video game Doom, and this particular model of chainsaw is the model for the one used in the game. The creators of this game are reuniting this weekend in Dallas for the first time since 1993, so I hope they'll each autograph it before I put it back on my shelf. As it is fairly rare, I only trust myself (and TSA) to transport it without damage. My hope is that you understand and relate to this.

Thank you for reading & for helping keep the skies safe! Text me XXX-XXX-XXXX w/ any questions. Keith <3

"Relationships are a lot like pointillism. You have to step back to look at the full picture." - Byakuya Kuchiki

It can be easy to become too laser-focused on something in life. Not just a goal, but maybe a tragedy, or a sudden fortunate thing, or even simple things like getting stuck in traffic. It's important to consider the cause that led to this effect. It's also key to take time away from things at times and take stock of what kind of impact it's having on your life. Time away from the task can show you how important it is to you when you get tired of it, or show that maybe you've been stuck at this current phase for too long and need to take another step forward.

“Live out of your imagination instead of out of your memory.” - Leslie Brown

There are many people as an adult that you'll meet that have the “high schiool mentality”. Popular people that remember the parties and friends they had but don't maintain those relationships. Captains of athletic teams that think they still command or are in any way worthy of authority. Honor students that still think themselves the smartest people in the room and think that that gives them some semblance of superiority. People who had more active metabolisms and can't leave behind the memories and deal with their new, current “normal”.

There's nothing for you back there, in the memories of the past. Nothing worthwhile, anyway. At least dreams are new and in the present, regardless of how impossible they may seem to reach."You have some really critical decisions to make, and the first decision that you should really consider is conceding prior to the match." - Brennan Lee Mulligan

Not all decisions should be answered with “yes”. An honest decision requires you to really think about the consequences of what you're trying to do, for better AND for worse. I've said earlier to name your price early; we're talking about both the price it takes to succeed and the price it takes to fail.

If you can't handle the price, you may be better off taking a step back, at least for the time being.

“Hey. That's Hell you're walking into.” - Shirou Emiya

Similarly, there will be other people that look at what you're trying to do and will try to warn you away from it. It can be hard, but many times this will come from people you care about, and they'll do so to try and keep you from getting hurt. Oftentimes, you have to be willing ignore them and go through Hell for what's best for you in the long term."Love art in yourself, not yourself in art." - Constantin Stanislavski

You may reach a level of success where fame follows. It's extremely important not to let any of it go to your head. You can't do the work because you want other people to like you or think of you in some way. You have to do it because you love the work, or at least the end result of the work as itself. Care about what you do, and care about who you are, but don't bother with the public's opinion.

“To achieve something that you have never achieved before, you must become someone that you have never been before.” - Leslie Brown

Another quote of his I heard from a talk he gave was similar. “To have something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before”. If you want to change, you must tread on different ground. You might even have to tread on ground where there is none, and trample on the grass until it reveals dirt and make a road that way.

“I know.” - Knower

Change is important, but it's also important to know who you are now and who you're becoming. And sometimes who you become is really who you always were. And maybe you were unsure at the time, but in the end, you'll know.
