like the answer can't be "well you shouldn't be allowed in public ever" because that's obviously ableist and discriminatory as hell. but also black artists should be able to accept awards without having to hear slurs.

First day of my Philosophy of Cosmology class! I'm interpreting "cosmology" pretty broadly. There will be three main topics: 1) Anthropics and the multiverse; 2) The arrow of time; 3) Quantum foundations, especially Many-Worlds. The idea of self-locating uncertainties will be a common thread.

Illustration of a Bilbo Baggins smoking a pipe. Text reads “"IF MORE OF US VALUED FOOD AND CHEER AND SONG ABOVE HOARDED
GOLD, IT WOULD BE A MERRIER WORLD." J.R.R. TOLKIEN”. Could not find the artist, maybe from the illustrated version of the book???

I recognize that a lot of settlers who left everything behind to go to California for nice weather and a sense of smug superiority might struggle with this, but not everybody wants to abandon their heritage, their homeland, and their family history.

This image of the Ring Nebula, taken by Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera, appears as a distorted doughnut. The nebula’s inner cavity hosts shades of blue and green, while the detailed ring transitions through shades of orange in the inner regions and pink in the outer region. The ring’s inner region has distinct filament elements. Stars litter the scene, with a particularly prominent star with 8 long spikes in the top right corner.Colorful clouds of gas and dust crowd the image. Deep red and orange clouds surround the image's edges, with some violet in the upper left portion. Near the left middle, a region of teal and yellow shines.A star cluster is shown inside a large nebula of many-coloured gas and dust. The material forms dark ridges and peaks of gas and dust surrounding the cluster, lit on the inner side, while layers of diffuse, translucent clouds blanket over them. Around and within the gas, a huge number of distant galaxies can be seen, some quite large, as well as a few stars nearer to us which are very large and bright.A colorful, glowing nebula that reaches beyond the top and bottom of the image. This translucent cloud of gas holds wispy and thin filaments with hard edges in some places, and puffy and opaque in others. Blue, red, and yellow colors mix together, showing light emitted by different types of atoms in the hot gas. Scattered across the colorful nebula are bright and point-like foreground and background stars. The background is black.

There’s nothing I love more than being told that everything I have worked to learn and fought to do for literally my entire life will be replaced by AI. Like, if this were a post-scarcity communist society that would be more acceptable. But what am I supposed to do to live? Become a politician?

Looking east over Lake Michigan, just as the sun is about to rise. The sky is deep red, orange, and peach. The lake is a dark inky blue-black with orange highlights on the choppy surface.

i need some space… and maybe you do too
A massive spiral galaxy fills the image, with its bright yellow core seen near the upper left. Spiral arms whirl outward, laced through with dark brown dust and bright blue patches of star formation.Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is a cone-shaped orange-red cloud known as Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. Along the cone there are additional rounded edges, like edges of a wave, and intricate foamy-like details, as well as a clearer view of the black background of space. In the upper left, overlapping with the rounded end of Herbig-Haro 49/50, is a background spiral galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outward to blend with red spiral arms. The background of space is speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies throughout.A densely packed cluster of yellow stars shines at the center of the image, with more stars scattered throughout. Clouds of glowing indigo gas and dust dominate the lower half of the view, and a red star with diffraction spikes shines at upper right.A nebula made up of cloudy gas and dust in the form of soft and wispy clouds and, in the center, thin and highly detailed layers pressed close together. Large, bright stars surrounded by six long points of light are dotted over the image, as well as some small, point-like stars embedded in the clouds. The clouds are lit up in blue close to the stars; orange colors show clouds that glow in infrared light.

What do baby planets 🪐 have in common with supermassive black holes? 💥 There’s this weird thing in astronomy where, across mind-boggling differences of scale, you keep finding jets of radiation shooting out of the poles of things. I wrote about why that happens for @sciencefocus.bsky.social 🧪🔭

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

A sick sunfish stopped eating after its aquarium closed for renovations so the staff put cutouts of humans and pictures of smiling faces outside the tank and then it started eating the next day. Reminds me of lockdown. Maybe I should have tried that? apnews.com/article/japa...

Let’s talk about resistance after a conqueror takes power. Specifically let’s talk about this bendy yellow building, and what it shows us about the moment the Florentine Republic finally fell to its kleptocratic/proto-capitalist banking-fortune Medici conquerors 1/?
Photograph of a building in Florence. A tall thin stone section rises up, from street level several stories. About the level of the second story, a yellow section sticks out from the outside of it, awkwardly wrapping around the outside of the stone part, supported by elegant sticky-outy triangular struts. The yellow section has several small circular windows, much too small for a human to climb through, barely large enough for a chubby cat.

Two screenshots from the second Lord of the Rings movie, The Two Towers. Frodo has started to give up hope, and Sam reminds him that there’s always something to fight for. In the top panel, Frodo says “What are we holding onto Sam?” In the bottom panel, at the end of a speech which is not included in these screenshots, Sam answers Frodo’s question by saying, “That there’s good in this world Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”
