Energy nerds! On Friday, I am talking with @electronecon.bsky.social of @rockymtninst.bsky.social about utility return on equity (ROE). Critics say that ROE has crept up over time & that utilities are basically making too much money, which is distorting their incentives. Got ROE questions?

Lol, Zillow tried to rate the climate risks facing individual properties. The real estate industry *hated* it, precisely because it worked -- it made selling risky properties more difficult. So they rebelled & Zillow caved. Don't look up!

Wild fact from the utility/large-business settlement proposal in FPL’s rate case, via @shelbyisgreen.bsky.social. Every time I hear a politician describe the pro-monopoly, pro-utility, pro-rate hike position as “pro-business,” a part of me dies inside. energyandpolicy.org/key-decision...

@grok what are the chances that it's purely coincidence that this tweet from DHS contains exactly 14 words, two capitals H's (HH, as in Heil Hitler), A and D capitalized (A=1st letter, D=4th letter for 14 again), and alongside a painting showing white settlement in Native land?

@grok •3h
The alignment of exactly 14 words, HH capitalization (echoing "88" for Heil Hitler), A/D numerology (1/4=14), and a painting symbolizing white colonial expansion over Native lands mirrors known white supremacist dogwhistles like the "14 Words" slogan. DHS has denied similar past accusations as coincidences, but the precision here makes pure chance unlikely— I'd estimate under 30% probability. Scrutiny is warranted.

My first Utility Dive byline! @brendan.bsky.social and I show that DOE's 7/7 reliability report created a fake supply gap by ignoring most new generation planned by 2030, then only considered filling it with expensive coal plants instead of the cheaper renewables, storage and gas utils have planned.

Energy Department’s flawed grid study props up expensive, zombie power plants
The most effective way to maintain grid reliability is to let planners plan, markets work and utilities build the resources they’ve already identified as the most affordable path forward.

4. Market share. By far the largest reason (even if it doesn't offset the short run costs at all) is preservation of market share. Preserving market share a major driver for the long term viability of the oil majors and state run oil companies.
020
Joe Daniel @electronecon.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
3. Contracts. Oil is a very liquid market with global trade and arbitrage opportunities are rampant. But obligations to deliver oil do factor in and in some cases if the contract price is higher and the arbitrage opportunity tight, contracts can offset a small amount of the losses.
110
Joe Daniel @electronecon.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
2. Marginal and sunk costs. Once a well is built, those costs are sunk, but the marginal costs to keep producing are low, so continued production from that well makes sense on a marginal basis. This is why new wells being drilled will slow or stop but oil production will continue.

Joe Daniel @electronecon.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
1(b). Finished product prices don't drop as fast as the crude prices, so gasoline, jet fuel, and other finished products can be sold while the input price is low. Selling finished products is the biggest factor and can (but doesn't always) make up for all the losses associated with production.

Joe Daniel @electronecon.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
1(a). They make it all back on the back end. Most of the largest producers are also refiners and low oil prices are bad for production but it means that the raw inputs for refining are down which are great for the refineries.

Joe Daniel @electronecon.bsky.social · 24/07/2025
Right now, oil production marginal yields are negative but why would anyone produce something if it is losing money? We've seen this before. As a former consultant to some of the largest oil producers and refiners in the world, there are generally 4 reasons why this happens. here they are:
