I can't claim to know what Eternal Torment is like. But i'm sure its not too disimillar to being the Bakers and seeing how people took the wrong lessons from Apocalypse World and instead are making VERY flanderized versions of it that look nothing like it.

I think games need better frameworks to encourage good improv from GMs and its players, PBTA is one step towards it, but it has mostly been kept to the genre of "narrative games" and even then they just tell you to "go with what makes sense in the moment" Basically, you need some framework imo

I don't think there's a game that was ever made worse with improv, and I think eventually every GM has to learn how to do improv to run games to improve and cultivate their skills. But the flipside is a lot of games think "improvise something" is good advice with nothing to back it up.

I guess I don't entirely feel like we're worse-off w/ monster hunter btw In Wilds I knocked a monster off a cliff, then plunge-attacked after it into the next zone, which I'll never forget. They did good hard work to make it all work, but I still miss what we left behind every now and again

When Monster Hunter transitioned to the World era we lost how a transition can imply a great amount of distance traveled where each map zone can have its own beautiful hand-crafted vista I miss that We don't have to model the whole town!

Also, I think Ocarina strikes a good balance between "You can just walk into a shop smoothly because we can do that now" and "We still transition you to castle town with a matte painting texture at the end of the entrance gate because it preserves implied scale"
