This decision saddens me. If there are legitimate concerns about fairness, there are other ways to handle that. One of the things I love so much about the Olympics is how it purports to bring all different kinds of people together from around the world. This decision feels like the opposite.

Okay, I kind of really love this costume? The colors, the lines, the flow...

Okay, I love the detail on these costumes. And I remember thinking their rhythm dance costumes were cool, too. Hang on, found pics for both. Yeah. I like.

Free idea for Olympic broadcasts: Show a small clock in some corner of the screen. It should show host country time relative to the event. If someone is skiing downhill at 10AM vs 2PM Italy time, I wanna know. Am I watching a replay or highlight of an event that happened at 8AM or 8PM? Tell me!

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

It’s no guarantee but the first thing you should do if you see an outrageous story that’s just an image or screenshot or video with no link to a reputable source is to check the replies and see if someone is saying “that’s an AI fake.” And then don’t spread it either way because it’s not sourced.
