Trump: I could’ve done very bad things to Hillary Clinton. I could’ve done very, very bad things to Joe Biden. I could’ve done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama. I thought it was inappropriate to do so because you have to treat the office of the presidency with respect.

Oh no. Another child's body has been retrieved from the rubble in Pryluky - the 19th victim of Russia's latest heinous war crime. A huge crater near the Children's Creativity Centre. A missile attack which murdered 3 generations of a family. Baby Oleksandr, mum Katerina and grandma Viktoriia.

In my family of formerly staunch Middle England Tories this has gone down like a bucket of cold sick. Plenty of Tories do in fact like the environment and while the party is saying that this won't apply to housing I'm not sure that message will cut through compared to abolition itself.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

Capital gains taxed at lower rates than wages. 2024-25: 584000 people paid £24.2bn capital gains tax (CGT) on £127.3bn gains. 45% of CGT paid by those with gains of £5m+, less than 1% of CGT payers. Align CGT rates with tax rates on wages, generate £12bn-£14bn. More if NIC charged.

Its unlikely Simon Clarke has bad memories of the 1970s as he was born in 1984. This helps to explain why he forgets a recession made worse by Thatcher driving interest rates up with her uneccessary monetarist policy. The only thing that saved the tories was the Falklands war & North Sea oil.

Simon Clarke, born in 1984, of course remembers the 70s very well. As someone who was SoS for Levelling Up and Housing and Communities under Johnson, he knows a thing or two about inequality. He was part of a government which has taken us back to Victorian levels of richest and poorest in society.
