a screenshot from the upcoming remake of Tomb Raider 1. lara croft is looking at her phone in the middle of an ancient ruin, and it's showing her a generic crafting menu, and a png of saucepan of stew that apparently her phone lets her cook for "Damage resistance" if she has 6 potatoes

This is the era of no guarantees. Deep Rock was a major small-studio success story from 2018-on, and I would say the franchise has a genuine fan base. But an effective sequel has gone mostly unnoticed. Reception feels arbitrary at times in gaming.

When I started receiving emails about "AI Appreciation Day" last year, I became curious about where these "days" even come from, expecting the trail to lead me to a marketing company. Instead, it led me to a guy camped on a beach outside of SpaceX for a year.

What Microsoft did to id Software this week was a tragedy -- a failure to safeguard the lives of its workers. But it was also a telling failure of vision to have *that* legacy in your hands and to discard it like so much nothing

How do you put a price tag on a legacy like id Software's?
If Xbox can't find the value in owning the beating heart of the first-person shooter, perhaps it shouldn't be in the videogame business at all.

Key line here in Xbox's dismal layoffs announcement. Gaming has been in an age of parity for years and years, but this is one of the first formal acknowledgements from a publisher—the biggest game orgs compete with individual game creators like Zeekerss or lemorion_1224 in the attention economy.
"We now find ourselves competing not only with the largest publishers, but also with smaller independent studios," writes Xbox
