Pretty clear to me there’s a very good case against this man for mass murder, and I’m saying that in as measured a fashion as I can. He’s order the killing of 234 people under no plausible war or legal justification. I am skeptical he will ever face legal accountability for til his but he should.

Grinnell has a required writing class for first-year students. As part of the class, we have to teach about academic honesty and avoiding plagiarism. Easy enough, I thought, until I got the first student question: "Why does Grinnell seem to take this so much more seriously than it does Title IX?"

an approximate graph of a poll saying that ~80% of americans think "america would be better off if more americans worked in manufacturing" whereas ~25% believe "i would be better off if i worked in a factory." the republicans polled were slightly higher in both before somebody gets mad at me for not making this about that

I know I'm out of touch, because I've only seen five of the top 10 shows, and Curb Your Enthusiasm is the only one I didn't give up on (although I'll never get around to watching them all).

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the most stereotypically Tory conservative man of the 21st Century, responded to Suella Braverman with a long-form video criticizing her position and rejecting a race-based theory of Englishness, and in response has been ratioed by the increasingly feral British online far-right.

Another example of someone's public persona winning out over their private persona. This 100% tracks with who she is (public figure), but maybe not who she is (private life).

Nick Beckstead, noted longtermist and "effective altruist,” just comes out and says it: "But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things being equal."
This is precisely why Nick Beckstead, a noted EA, argued in 2013 that, given the "overwhelming" moral importance of the far future - "millions, billions, and trillions" of years from now - we should prioritize saving the lives of people in rich countries over those in poor countries, other things being equal. The reason is that people in rich countries are better positioned to influence the far future.

To take another example, saving lives in poor countries may have significantly smaller ripple effects

than saving and improving lives in rich countries. Why? Richer countries have substantially more

innovation, and their workers are much more economically productive. By ordinary standards at

least by ordinary enlightened humanitarian standards saving and improving lives in rich countries

is about equally as important as saving and improving lives in poor countries, provided lives are

improved by roughly comparable amounts. But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life

in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things
being equal.
Screenshot from Beckstead's 2013 PhD dissertation, regarded as one of the founding documents of longtermism, one of the main cause areas of EA.

Every time I teach Gilgamesh, I mention the Darmok episode of Star Trek: TNG, which is somehow inspired by Gilgamesh. Anyway, I always recommend it, but never watch it. I'm feeling very proud of remembering "Darmok and Jalad at Teneggra" yesterday in response to a student question.

Is there a book out there that offers a conceptual history of "philosophy?" Like how the meaning of this term has evolved over time? Doesn't have to cover pre-Socratics through 2026, but I'm not opposed to reading 4,500 pages.

He had so many great articles on ESPN. I cannot believe they let him write this kind of thing; but I needed it. It often felt like he was the only other person who saw things as I did. I read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 as a 16 year old in 2002. That's how much I loved him.

I can't imagine this war ever ending. Trump is not going to end it. A republican present won't betray Trump's legacy by ending it and a democratic president won't want to be seen as weak (a la Biden) by ending it.

fun part if you ask me: higher ed institutions in secular democracies are the closest approximation of a 'marketplace of ideas' as you are likely to find this side of a global revolution and a lot of people who claim to like that idea do not seem to love its results
