Really sad to lose a place where you can get a nice slice of cake. The fact that they wrote a note like this without using the terms construction, parking, or bike lane endears them to me more

Got a delicious saffron latte from Haraz Coffee on Lake & Lyndale this morning! In a world of disappearing third spaces it’s so cool to see a coffee shop that is open until 10 PM - later on the weekend. I hope they get lots of support!!

At the same time local ‘crisis giving’ & go fund me giving is new / different these days & that is developing its own culture among younger folks especially. Something I’m curious about watching

There’s an interesting line of thought among some fundraising pros that the decline in religiosity is bad for giving overall. While I think religion is largely morally neutral (sometimes good! sometimes bad!) I do think it often gets people in the habit of giving early & often

My income is about 2/3 of yours & my donation budget is $375/month I work in philanthropy & while I feel like my giving budget is embarrassingly low (I don’t have kids) my impression is that it is high for my age/income (though I could be wrong about that)

Seeing a lot of "here's how I'd optimize the State Fair experience" on the tl. At some point, you have to accept that the State Fair is not built for convenience. Like Disneyland or a professional sports game. If you want to revel in how the Fair is a big, monocultural thing, this is the tradeoff.

I think if it comes to it they may have to limit the number of tickets available each day (275,000?) but I hope they can find something equitable that keeps prices low & allows for some presales plus walk-ups or lottery

The popular stuff is very popular! There was one thing (seed art) that I skipped because the line was long & there are other things I valued more with my time that day I will visit the seed art Mia exhibit when it opens I also stood in line for the Hmong corn dog twice b/c I valued it

I wonder if we’d see induced demand with more space or more days? Maybe, maybe not. I was there yesterday as well (8:15 AM - ~10:15 PM). What I personally saw was areas where it was crowded, & areas where it wasn’t. Some long lines, many short or non-existant ones.

What would you do about all the vendors and the people who bring their animals? Could their family & friends not watch them compete? We’re super lucky to have our state fair in the city, and my understanding of fairs is they’re rooted in farm culture which is largely rural

I think this is a real ‘you aren’t in traffic, you are traffic’ situation. The fair is for everyone. I wish they could sustainably make it free. It is a real gift that we have our state fair in the city & accessible without a car. & it’s just as much (more…) for rural 4H kids & everyone else.

I get a little sentimental seeing so many people I don't know who gave years of their lives organizing to make my neighborhood better, safer, and more livable. Your work is a gift to people you don't know, who will inevitably take this infrastructure for granted.

My biggest gripe about Hennepin is that some businesses lost their patio space (or are now understandably taking the whole ped right of way for patio). I’m really thrilled that was heard & reflected in the Lyndale design.
