My view at the moment. I’m still sick, but I’m wrapped up and sitting outside with a book and it’s the closest to ok I’ve felt all week.

The problem with working at a 24hr center is that sometimes I get pulled to work a late shift, and then it takes me hours to actually chill out enough to go to sleep after. So tired, yet also wired. It’s ok, brain. You can stop now. (I drew this animation a while back.)

I think the art/craft I’m proudest of in my whole life was this anthology I printed and hand-bound for my niece. I even sewed in real headbands to finish it (if you know bookbinding, you get why that’s cool). I’m very much a diy amateur, but I was really happy with this one.

I spent the last of my Canadian cash at the airport today, getting my ten-year-old Docs polished at a shoeshine stand. Well worth it! They don’t exactly look new, but they look a lot fresher than they did before!

Vancouver’s downtown area, lit up, is really beautiful.
The skyline of part of downtown Vancouver near the Westin Bayshore hotel. Many tall glass buildings have individual square windows lit up against a dark blue sky, with water and boats visible on the left side.

The coolest thing about learning about mushrooms is that I’m noticing them everywhere. I saw these while walking around today.
Bright red round mushrooms with white bulbs, on the ground among dead leaves and green grass.

I went mushroom foraging yesterday, with a professional guide. We didn’t find all that many edible mushrooms, but it was really fun to learn about a few and explore the temperate rainforest.
Maritime forest with tall trees creating a cainomy and many fallen trees on beds of green moss. A figure with a long beard wearing layers and a raincoat speaks to a group whose heats are just visible. A hand with grey fingernails holds a large yellow/orange chanterelle mushroom. Tall red-toned straight tree trunks with bright green leaves and needles at the time. Bright green moss on the ground.Large mushrooms growing on a fallen log on a bed of green ferns.

“…you really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be…But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won't be the same person who walked in.” Haruki Haruki Murakami from Kafka on the Shore:
Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you.
So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step. There's no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverized bones. That's the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine. And you really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be, make no mistake about it: it will cut through flesh like a thousand razor blades. People will bleed there, and you will bleed too. Hot, red blood. You'll catch that blood in your hands, your own blood and the blood of others. And once the storm is over you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won't be the same person who walked in.
That's what this storm's all about.

I liked Romeo + Juliet fine when it came out, then soured on it upon rewatching ten years ago. I came all the way back around watching it tonight. What a movie! It’s a story I’ve read and seen a thousand times, but I was fully vibrating at this version’s frequency this time. Loved it.

I woke up feeling overwhelmed and with a headache, so I sat out on the porch in the dark and quiet and watched it slowly get light behind the dense fog. Crows, chickadees, woodpeckers, tree frogs are making a great racket now. It’s wonderful.

I got to meet Saul Williams a few years back. He has an enormous presence and I almost started crying while we spoke. I showed him my commonplace book where I’d written out his words to “Release” and asked him if he’d sign the next page. This is what he signed:
Small hand-printing in black and red pen on two blank notebook pages:
Inner breathlessness, outer restlessness
By the time I caught up to freedom I was out of breath
Grandma asked me what I'm running for
I guess I'm out for the same thing the sun is sunning for
What mothers birth their youngens for
And some say Jesus coming for
For all I know the earth is spinning slow
Suns at half mast 'cause masses ain't aglow
On bended knee, prostrate before an altered tree
I've made the forest suit me
Tables and chairs
Papers and prayers
Matter versus spirit
A metal ladder
A wooden cross
A plastic bottle of water
A mandala encased in glass
A spirit encased in flesh
Sound from shaped hollows
The thickest of mucus released from heightened passion
A man that cries in his sleep
A truth that has gone out of fashion
A mode of expression
A paint splattered wall
A carton of cigarettes
A bouquet of corpses
A dying forest
A nurtured garden
A privatized prison
A candle with a broken wick
A puddle that reflects the sun
A piece of paper with my name on it
I'm surrounded
I surrender
All
All that I am I have been
All I have been has been a long time coming
I am becoming all that I am
The spittle that surrounds the mouth-piece of the flute
Unheard, yet felt
A gathered wetness
A quiet moisture
Sound trapped in a bubble
Released into wind
Wind fellows and land merchants
We are history's detergent
Water soluble, light particles, articles of cleansing breath
Articles amending death
These words are not tools of communication
They are shards of metal
Dropped from eight story windows
They are waterfalls and gas leaks
Aged thoughts rolled in tobacco leaf
The tools of a trade
Barbers barred, barred of barters
Catch phrases and misunderstandings
But they are not what I feel when I am alone
Surrounded by everything and nothing
And there isn't a word or phrase to be caught
A verse to be recited
A man to de-fill my being in those moments
I am blankness, the contained center of an "O"
The pyramidic containm…Green sharpie written on the left hand page of a blank notebook:

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes SW

I’m finally opening my first Math Doodler Club snail mail puzzle from @makeaproblem.bsky.social. This is such a cool idea.
Papers on top of a wooden table: a folded paper napkin, a round sticker with the words “Math Doodlers Club August 2026” and a 3x3 grid with the number 1-9 in black and blue. Underneath that is a postcard mostly covered on top of a mostly covered handwritten letter over a larger sheet of paper with the heading “Math Doodlers Club - August 2026, Problem #1: Grid Orders” visible at the top. Next to all of that is the back of a brown envelope with a pretty ink stamp and a sticker that says “Do Not Bend Thank You”

My 80-year-old mother is in the early stage of Alzheimer’s and it’s been a rough year for her, but painting is still her outlet and escape. I caught this photo of her today and I love it.

Twelve albums I listened to last week: See previous posts for my (very positive) thoughts on Gladie. That Hana Stretton album was a knockout, and I’m not sure if I posted about Bon Odori’s beautiful ambient release or not, but it was great.
gladie - No Need To Be Lonely
Hana Stretton - tiarn
Uncle Tupelo - Uncle Tupelo 89/93: An Anthology
Baby Rose - YEARNALISM

My spouse, who is a really good at gifts, gave me this worry stone. I’ve started carrying it around in my pocket and just sort of holding it in my hand at different points through out the day, and while I don’t think I believe in magical objects, there’s something really nice about it.

I’m reading Mrs. Dalloway on my lunch break. It’s been about a decade since the last time I read it and I forgot what a total pleasure it is. It flows over you like water.
