I didn't realize until after I finished packing the July test run of my snail mail club for math people,

that the July stamp has an "L" missing, so it says "Water Ilies" instead of "Water Lilies".

#hottake: Part of why math is such an unpopular subject is because of how compulsory it is, in both content and method. I'd love for there to be more options, not just "take Course A if you're going into Sciences and B otherwise", but "here are 3 optional topics, pick 2 to learn about". #MathSky

#hottake: If you walk into any elementary school classroom you'd see shelves full of reading material of different topics and levels. We need that for math, where a kid can go to a shelf and pick a problem and try it out on their own. Until we have that, teachers have their hands tied. #MathSky

#hottake: Reinforcing grammar rules and vocabulary is far from the main purpose of story books in a kid's life. It's an art form everyone should get to experience in school. Likewise, the main purpose of math problems isn't to reinforce formulas and techniques taught in math class. #MathSky

#hottake: Answer keys and solution manuals are great for drills, but they're overrated for problem solving. The skill there is in the exploration and sense-making of our own answers while handling the discomfort of the unknown, and an official solution takes away that opportunity. #MathSky

#hottake: What kids mean by "Math is useless" is less about math being used in the real world and more about lack of personal connection they feel to it. The remedy is to show them pieces of math that piqued OUR curiosity, not scientists' out there, since we don't know how they feel either. #MathSky

#hottake: Part of why our kids struggle with math IS because they don't spend enough time with problems where they have to figure out what tools to use out of everything they've learned. They'd struggle with vocabulary too if we only ever gave them vocabulary lists and not books to read. #MathSky

#hottake: The quickest way to learn one math skill is through drills of that skill, but the quickest way to build overall math competence is through problems that draw on any number of skills at once, the same way reading builds general vocabulary faster than vocabulary lists. #MathSky
