I went mushroom foraging yesterday, with a professional guide. We didn’t find all that many edible mushrooms, but it was really fun to learn about a few and explore the temperate rainforest.

I don’t post a lot of food pcs, but this French toast I had this morning from a restaurant called Palate in Downtown Vancouver was the most amazing I’ve ever had. I’m ruined for all others forever.

Also, they may be common in Canada, but this is the first time I’ve seen a physalis (gooseberry) outside of Germany, which is funny since I believe they are endemic to South America.

It was definitely a dive, but once you showed up for a third time or so, you were counted as a regular. Spouse doesn’t drink at all anymore and I do only rarely, but that place, for that time was special. A good bar can do that.

Now I’m feeling all nostalgic for that smoky, sticky, dark dive. Here’s a video I made in 2012 of local blues legend and good friend, Lola Gulley starting off her set. She tended bar on Thursday afternoons and did all the music for our wedding. She passed in 2022. Her memory is indeed a blessing.

I woke up feeling overwhelmed and with a headache, so I sat out on the porch in the dark and quiet and watched it slowly get light behind the dense fog. Crows, chickadees, woodpeckers, tree frogs are making a great racket now. It’s wonderful.

I got to meet Saul Williams a few years back. He has an enormous presence and I almost started crying while we spoke. I showed him my commonplace book where I’d written out his words to “Release” and asked him if he’d sign the next page. This is what he signed:
