from the "intelligence of evil" but you get the drift ...
"Behind its euphoric exaltation, this imperative of maximum performance bears within it evil and misfortune in the form of a deep disavowal and a secret disillusionment. Perhaps performance is merely a collective form of human sacrifice, but disembodied and distilled into our entire technological machinery.
In this strange world, where everything is potentially available - the body, sex, space, money, pleasure - to be taken or rejected en bloc, everything is there; nothing has disappeared physically, but everything has disappeared metaphysically. 'As if by magic,' one might say, except that it has disappeared not so much by enchantment as by disenchantment.
Individuals, such as they are, become exactly what they are. Without transcendence and without image, they carry on their lives like a useless function in the eyes of another world, irrelevant even in their own eyes.
And they do what they do all the better for the fact that there is no other possibility. No authority to appeal to.
They have sacrificed their lives to their functional exist-ences. They are one with the exact numerical calculation of their lives and their performance.
Summoned to get the greatest efficiency and pleasure out of themselves, human beings are suddenly at odds and their existences dislocated.
An existence realized, then, but at the same time denied, thwarted, disowned." — Jean Baudrillard

It's a matter of factual record that the American Historical Association argued that the legitimacy of the historical profession rests on "appropriately narrow boundaries," thus safeguarding it from political reprisals. Let's see how that narrow-and-safe ploy turned out.
This issue of Fortnightly News [September 2024] includes major policy interventions on the part of the AHA. We're more active than any comparable association in our activism on behalf of the work of historians, whether the professional integrity of teachers in states considering and/or enacting "divisive concepts" legislation, state social studies standards, or reminding congressional staff that everything has a history and why that history matters. We also occasionally sign onto amicus curiae briefs when historical method and accuracy stand at the center of the issue.
The AHA cannot, does not, and should not intervene everywhere. We don't comment on controversies in other disciplines. As a membership
association, we keep our distance from issues that are controversial within and among our members. And we keep in mind that our effectiveness rests on our legitimacy, our reputation for even-handedness, professional integrity, and appropriately narrow boundaries.
See the AHA's Guiding Principles for Taking a Public Stance. 2024Headline "UT proposes cutting more than 100 'narrow' courses from core, starting this spring" By Lily Kepner, Staff Writer Updated Sep 3, 2026. Details cutting of many "narrow" history courses

It's also important to note that ever since the war, some Europeans and esp Dutch would prefer to minimize both their complicity in the genocide and the gravity of what actually transpired in Bosnia from 1992 to 1995. That's why these obfuscations persist, but so do we.

right, after 3 years of mass slaughter accompanied by the establishment of int'l bodies to investigate the war crimes, Karremans was not aware. it's frankly disgusting to state such obfuscations in 2026 bsky.app/profile/elve...

The death of Ratko Mladić means nothing to me. He won. The West rewarded the genocide and handed almost half of Bosnia's territory to his political project. As long as the genocidal entity exists, no justice is possible. The monument to his crimes outlives him.

The American Historical Association hired a lobbying firm to help silence member advocacy on Palestine. In this essay, Adam Rzepka covers @historians.org's relationship w/ Thorn Run Partners, its deep ethical conflicts, & the advocacy crisis AHA has thrust upon us. www.chronicle.com/article/a-sc...

the thing is, there are AHA officials who are true believers when it comes to this. they don't need a lobbying firm to research & inform them that the other historian plebs are moral deviants while they're on the righteous path, and they've said as much over the last 3 yrs

Grimace in sunglasses looking cool as the other side of the pillow is poised at the open door of what looks like a corvette-like kit car. Xe(Grimace is non binary) has a full purple shake that rests on the roof of the sports car. There is a purple gel over the image. A low mist clings to the ground. Is this a dream? Or has this mythical badass been conjured? The song “I need a hero” is most likely blazing on xir am/fm radio.

I haven't heard people talk about this, but history involves a lot of human error as well as human getting things right. AI is an absolute game changer as it takes out both of those things in a delightfully easy way. /s

So many converging factors have shrunk the spaces of intellectual and material connection (and as you said, the banality of social media are just one small reflection of it, bsky seems really bad for non-US discussions). The pandemic did damage too, but fascist consolidation is at the root of this

I asked why, he said it's important to see for yourself (but not Sarajevo). When I told him my family was shelled for 4 yrs from Pale, he just walked away.

trying to put it together: there are scientists (from original post) who are also common bsky characters, who refuse to use genAI, but in science they've already for decades used ML, so they are using it? in any case, still seems like punching down while AI companies wreck education, society etc etc
100
edin h @edinh.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
i really don't get what is the target of the original post... genAI does differ from older pattern-recognition ML types in the ability to generate new combinations and inevitable hallucinations etc. i really don't understand who or what the original post is trying to criticize?
100
edin h @edinh.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
i don't get it — which scientists are actively resisting machine learning? is that what your original post is criticizing? or something else? (because my impression is that most scholars have been using all kinds of applied statistics and ML for decades, but "genAI" is something else, we're told)
