Just watched THE LONG, HOT SUMMER on Criterion. Orson Welles, 43 and playing 61 (and looking it) gives a performance of truly epic awfulness. He singlehandedly destroys the movie, not a great loss considering it's imitation Tennessee Williams and totally ersatz.

I love no actor more than Louis Jouvet, and I think his philosophical Baron in Renoir's LES BAS-FONDS is his finest performance. With Jean Gabin, also wonderful as the thief he befriends. Their discussion about life by a riverbank was the director's favorite scene in the film, with good reason.
