Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 13/10/2026It was impossible to pick 9. Where's Bonjour Tristesse? Or The Great Dictator? Or Manhattan, Call Me By Your Name, Mad Max Fury Road, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Nightmare Alley, Summertime, Mildred Pierce, The Shop Around the Corner, The Palm Beach Story, Morocco, etc. etc. 040
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 11/10/2026JUNIOR BONNER (1972) is an uncharacteristically relaxed Sam Peckinpah film with a wonderful performance by Robert Preston as Steve McQueen's cowboy father. His Ace is a rootless big-talking dreamer, and Preston uses his own charisma like a weapon, wounding anyone who depends on him for anything. 2134
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 09/10/2026The Netflix doc WHO IS MARTIN MULL? is an unexpectedly humane, deep, and moving portrait of a man who flew his own greatness just under the radar. Highly recommended. 130

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 06/10/2026First-time watch and it's... not that good? Bland actors, drab atmosphere, duh-duh-DUH!! music each time the Creature appears. Did this movie's reputation come entirely from Boomers who saw it when they were eight? I can't imagine an adult being into this thing, except nostalgically. 010
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 04/10/2026If you rearrange the letters and switch one, "Super Intelligence" reads "Epstein Ruling: Cell," which is much more accurate. 010

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Just watched The Browning Version on TCM. In a career of great performances this might be Michael Redgrave's best. He shows you a bitter petty tyrant and then breaks your heart for him. The whole cast is aces, especially Wilfred Hyde-White as Redgrave's unctuous, sleazy Headmaster. Awesome film. 240
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Just watched THE LONG, HOT SUMMER on Criterion. Orson Welles, 43 and playing 61 (and looking it) gives a performance of truly epic awfulness. He singlehandedly destroys the movie, not a great loss considering it's imitation Tennessee Williams and totally ersatz. 161

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 18/09/2026I love no actor more than Louis Jouvet, and I think his philosophical Baron in Renoir's LES BAS-FONDS is his finest performance. With Jean Gabin, also wonderful as the thief he befriends. Their discussion about life by a riverbank was the director's favorite scene in the film, with good reason. 000

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 11/09/202625 years ago, this country was attacked, on a bloody day I witnessed up close, by the very people this stinking sack of shit cozies up to for money. Here he is today, sleeping through a ceremony about it. Dreaming only of his own insatiable greed. Shame on all of us for tolerating him even slightly. 144

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 08/09/2026TONY, the new Anthony Bourdain origin-story, left me cold. There was no love in this movie: of places or people or food. Meanwhile Bourdain's soulfulness and dry Jersey wit were nowhere to be found—in the script or in Dominic Sessa's one-note charisma-free performance. 140
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 07/09/2026SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER (1959). Tennessee Williams shuddering at his own gayness, abetted by Gore Vidal. It's a measure of the previous century's internalized homophobia that these two gifted writers cooked up this stew of incest, cannibalism, and mental illness around one unseen gay character. 120
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Just rewatched THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (1956) in 4kUHD. Such a strange beast, this movie: almost every scene combines stale Bible talk, cheesy acting, flat staging, crude rear projection, AND glorious costumes, striking imagery, stunning practical effects, and a sturdy well-knit script. Gotta love it. 140
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 01/09/2026It's #bisexualvisibilitymonth and if you search for that hashtag + "bi icons" you'll see my last year's series of fabulous bi kings and queens speaking their truth. Not confused, not in denial, not experimenting. Maybe just a little greedy. 100
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 28/08/2026#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched Two rock-and-roll bios, and two occasions where Katharine Hepburn did some real acting (as opposed to "star" acting). LONG DAY'S JOURNEY is her finest achievement, maybe the greatest acting any performer of her generation ever did. 1140
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Currently listening to the new Dent May. Like a blend of Brian Wilson Beach Boys and George Martin-produced America. A perfect summer cocktail of an album... it goes down sweet but has a subtle kick to it. Recommended. 000
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 22/08/2026Just watched Spencer Tracy in DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, and "hide" is what he should've done after this performance. In fairness, he fought doing it... but he should've fought harder. Ingrid Bergman, as the horny but terrified barmaid, is the MVP of this movie. 040

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Just finished reading James Curtis' massive and definitive biography of Spencer Tracy, and it was a real journey. Tracy was far more sensitive and fragile than I ever imagined, also more tortured and dangerous. A great actor? Curtis clearly thinks so; I'm still not sure myself. 182

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 04/08/2026Watching Tracy and Hepburn in KEEPER OF THE FLAME and WITHOUT LOVE. Hard to decide which is lamer. KotF has a nice Antifa slant but she's amateurish and the film is just absurd. W/OL is a dumb comedy where the supporting cast gets the only laughs, and the score keeps telling you how cute it all is. 010
Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 01/08/2026Now watching. Plot doesn't make a lot of sense but Tracy + Davis, Curtiz, and the WB stock company sell it. 000

Eddie Selover @eddieselover.bsky.social · 26/07/2026This movie needed to be much nastier and lowdown, and if your lead is supposed to be a ruthless Casanova, why on earth would you cast bland, hopelessly "nice" Robert Young? Despite some good moments, Young is just too lightweight for Noir. #TCMParty #NoirAlley #TheyWontBelieveMe 120

All this dude has to do is turn everyone's festering grievance against MAGA, and make sure the Trump Trials are entertaining. Vengeance = big box office! 110
