A hidden archaeal lineage with an ultra-reduced genome retaining only its replicative core
Harada et al. describe an archaeon, recovered from a single marine plankton cell, whose 238-kb genome is the smallest known for the domain. It has lost nearly all metabolism but keeps the machinery to...

Congrats to the Nobel winners! But let's not forget the animal opsins side (real GPCRs) which were shown to confer photosensitivity when heterologously expressed in neurons prior to microbial channelrhodopsin: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15674244/

A friend gave us a partially disassembled X-wing set (75355, 1900 pieces!) we also had to completely disassemble and sort the parts. Over a few months we spent some time each evening working on it with K1 (after K2 bedtime) and listening to Star Wars soundtrack. Very fun!

This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands
(They're called manicules!)
Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

I just read Jane Eyre for the first time and loved it! interesting reading it closer to Rochester’s age than Jane’s. Also “no possibility of going for a walk” the day I picked it up (Texas summer heat) so I laughed out loud when I read that first line and enjoyed it from there

Applying for jobs after 40:
Monologue by Rochester from Jane Eyre:

"Yes, yes, you are right," said he; "I have plenty of faults.of my own: I know it, and I don't wish to palliate them, I assure you. God wot I need not be too severe about others; have a past experience, a series of deeds, a colour of life to contemplate within my own breast, which might well call many sneers and censures from my neighbours to myself. I started, or rather (for, like other defaulters, I like to lay half the blame on ill-fortune and adverse circumstances) was thrust on to a wrong tack, at the age of one and twenty, and have never recovered the right course since; but I might have been very different; I might have been as good as you-wiser-almost as stainless. I envy you your peace of mind, your clean conscience, your unpolluted memory. Little girl, a memory without blot or contamination must be an exquisite trea-sure—an inexhaustible source of pure refreshment: is it not?'
