Bewitched sleep: Russians’ views on Ukraine and the world – European Council on Foreign Relations
New research shows Russians see little prospect of influencing the war in Ukraine, but expect relations with Europe to improve in the future.

Europe is right to prioritise security – but it should not abandon the remaining ways of contact and interaction with Russian society, at least indirectly. One day, Putin will be gone, but Russia will always be Europe’s neighbour.
100
ECFR European Security @ecfreuropeansec.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Views gathered through the research suggest that Russians see little prospect of influencing the war in Ukraine and are mostly content to keep their heads down. Still, it would be a mistake to dismiss them as a potential actor, as hard as it is to communicate with Russian society directly.
100
ECFR European Security @ecfreuropeansec.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
In fact, Russians’ opinions towards Europe have hardened and the United States has lost its position as an arch-enemy.

ECFR European Security @ecfreuropeansec.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Despite censorship and propaganda, Russians remain surprisingly attentive to developments in Europe, with nuanced views about the outside world. Still, their understanding of why Europeans oppose the war and support Ukraine is weak.

The study by @kadriliik.bsky.social and @jkobzova.bsky.social offers a rare glimpse into how Russians see their country and the war, whom they consider friends and enemies, and how they perceive Europe, the United States or China. ecfr.eu/publication/...

Europe faces a dual drone threat. Every time an overflight of critical infrastructure or incursion at the eastern flank happens, wherever it comes from, Russia learns something about Europe’s ability to fight (or otherwise) against these systems. By @rikefranke.bsky.social ecfr.eu/publication/...
