I oppose the closing of the National Archives facility in Chicago. The lack of transparency surrounding this decision has only deepened the loss it would represent for researchers, historians, dedicated employees, and our community. I urge the National Archives to reconsider this decision.

How many archival records will NARA relocate to places TBD? 236,219 cubic feet. That is hard to conceptualize. NARA's "Sources Sought" notice states they intend to use 22' trucks. 236,219 cubic feet calculates to 196.85 trucks to move the archival material to places TBD.

File under boring but important: On February 3, Congress passed H.R. 7148, the consolidated appropriations bill that includes funding for the National Archives and Records Administration. The bill was signed into law, allocating $421 million for NARA’s fiscal year (FY) 2026 operating budget.

For their first project, my Kids and Society students have to create an infographic clarifying a common misconception about "kids these days." I'd prefer that they not use AI to create their projects, so I made my own infographic explaining why : )

This is not only a serious issue for historians and not only a serious issue for academics (although it is that). It's a development that's also deleterious for the GLAM sector, for example, and part of a much larger trend nationally and internationally to restrict and dismantle access to archives.
