Me, an editor: Let's fix the continuity and passage of time in your novel. Me, a writer: My novel takes place over one week that contains spring, summer, and November 27, when I need my MC to attend An Event.

New story day, and it's a short one! “Ivan Ivanovich” is about spacecraft dummies & the illusion of safety & an adriftness that makes you feel far from your own self. Based on a real Soviet test flight mannequin from the '60s. In @othersidespec.bsky.social! 🧑🏼‍🚀 othersidespec.com/pieces/ivan-ivanovich
The cover of Otherside, issue 3. In shades of orange to yellow against a black background, a figure looks toward a grand stone structure with columns, a staircase, and two giant statues. There are leaning trees and what looks like wind or smoke. The issue is dated September 2026 and the contributors' names are listed in white at the bottom.A screengrab of the Otherside page hosting my short story, "Ivan Ivanovich." Otherside's illustrative purple banner is at the top, followed by the story's word count (1500 words) and the first three paragraphs of text.A photograph of the Ivan Ivanovich display at the National Air and Space Museum, sourced from Wikipedia. The mannequin is in the foreground wearing a helmet and orange flight suit.

One could argue that as the most widely read genre, romance is most deserving of care and attention, a refusal to concede to bland extruded text from the Average Intelligence machine. The potential to reach the greatest number of readers with your art, with your intellect, can be through romance.

Editing, and just ran into two dudes who 100% without a doubt absolutely committed petit larceny of a hog, c. 1910, but insist that they 100% without a doubt absolutely just "found his hogship on the road and drove it home." HIS HOGSHIP.

If you are so extraordinarily stupid that you fall for a standard Republican trans panic ruse, I cannot trust you to represent me in office. This is like media literacy 101. Your colleagues are going to run circles around you. Dupe you into anything. I'd be safer running and representing myself.

I was moderating a "Queer 101" panel at Norwescon, that happened simultaneous with the "Neurodivergence 101" panel. And we were all laughing about programming those so people had to choose between them, when the Venn Diagram is basically a circle. But Norwescon IS a great place for ND rep and fun.

Found a post-it from an old novel outline that says, "Tolly finds grimoires. Reads them. Historian tendency. Also a nosy bitch." And another had drifted under my desk. All it says is, "Man, why you gotta." I am a deeply unserious person.

This shit is exactly why I was 41 years old before I had my first trans teacher. And I have done A LOT of school. No shade to the otherwise queer and allied teachers who did their best by me. Just saying, a trans dude in rural Illinois would have changed my life, and I want that for kids today.

Hey: Tell Me Yours, I'll Tell You Mine for the lowest price out there! Part of Stillhouse Press's just-up sale on their speculative fiction titles, along with these other great books.
Graphic features five books that look like they'e hanging from a clothesline—Necronauts; Tell Me Yours, I'll Tell You Mine; Leafskin; Super Normal; and Finding Meaning in the Age of Immortality—against a blue sky with a tree and wispy clouds overhead. A combination of orange and white text reads: Stillhouse Press Speculative Fiction Sale; sale ends November 15th; all featured titles 20% off on stillhousepress.org. Graphic features my book Tell Me Yours, I'll Tell You Mine (yellow cover, pink text, brown bunnies racing around the corners) against a background of blue sky with wispy clouds and a tree overhead. Included in a white text window is a snippet from David Lewis' review of the book in The Masters Review, which refers to it as "wonderfully weird."

Yessssssssss so good Pro tip: Histories written before 1970 are basically just the "Personal Life" section of a Wiki page chucked into a blender with the author's undimmed psyche. See: E. P. Thompson's MAKING OF THE ENGLISH WORKING CLASS where we find out he really hated his dad.

Sometimes these two directives overlap for me, and I enjoy the act of elevating minds. But the majority of the time, I just want to hang out with my characters around a fire and listen to their charcoal-colored, cracked-open conversations. I also enjoy when they do sex and spells and sex spells.
